Water walk

Samhita Ilango is a Bonita Vista High School senior involved in the campus club Project Concern International organizing committee. Ilango said she heard about PCI’s efforts to raise funds for the current water crises affecting many impoverished countries and instantly knew she had to help.

“Our goal is to increase awareness, spread the word and speak on the importance of having clean water,” said Ilango, 18. “Our committee wants to provide an outlet for those in developing countries who have limited water resources.”
Joining the cause are fellow Bonita Vista High School students Lauren Green, Anika Harrell, Samhita Ilango, Linda Lee, Alyssa Pack and Priya Seth.

These students have been working on finalizing the event details for PCI’s fourth annual 5k Walk for Water happening Sunday, March 18.

“We have been broadcasting the walk as many places as we can,” said Priya Seth, 17. The walk is being advertised on the local radio and we have been putting posters up all over the city.”

Ilango said the committee has been diligently working toward raising money by targeting company owners to get their involvement in the cause.

“I work in sponsorships to get these companies interested in donating money to PCI,” she said.

This student-run event will go toward funding a water system for remote villages in Ethiopia and other lifesaving programs. The walk will include live music, food by Whole Foods, Kashi and NIKA water as well as arts and crafts for children.
