In need of something to raise your spirits? Or in the mood to see spirits raised from the beyond? If so, visit Chula Vista’s OnStage Playhouse to view “Blithe Spirit,” a classic comedy by Noel Coward.
In the funniest ghost story ever written, novelist Charles Condomine enlists Madame Arcati to hold a séance at his home hoping to raise some ideas for a new book. Instead, she raises the ghost of his former wife, Elvira, who is determined to wreak havoc (and succeeds) on Charles’ current marriage to Ruth. Now if he wants his latest marriage to stand a ghost of a chance, he’d better conjure up a solution quickly.
Comic characters abound. Charles, as played by Steve Murdock, is both long-suffering and rejuvenated by the ghostly appearance of his late wife. The two wives provide a fun contrast: Rhiannon McAfee as the dutiful but controlling second wife, and Carla Navarro as the playful and sexy first wife. Sandy Kotchkiss plays Madame Arcati, the effusive, outlandish medium.
Amy Dell adds physical humor as the maid, while James Steinberg and Donnalee Brayman do well in their roles as best friends. The play ends with a flourish you won’t want to miss.
Director O.P. Hadlock takes over triple duty in this play. As director, he creates comic flow and leads the actors to clear development of their roles. He also manages set and sound design. The set of a wealthy English home, with its paintings, flooring, and gramophone, becomes a third character. Costumes designed by Lisa Burgess are a standout, especially the enchanting outfits of Madame Arcati.
Patrons enjoyed the performance. One woman commented that she thoroughly enjoyed the comic dialogue. Another audience member mentioned that the set was phenomenal, with great attention to detail. She also felt the play was well cast. Appreciation goes to producer Bob Christiansen, lighting designer Chad Oakley, and stage manager Leah Vianna for their contributions.
