A gunman who walked up to a motorist in Chula Vista at 2 a.m. and shot him in the head in 2010 has been sentenced to 21 years in state prison.
Jose Luis Guadarrama, 27, was sentenced by Chula Vista Superior Court Judge Kathleen Lewis for the Dec. 5, 2010, shooting of Jesus Manuel Ruiz, 32, of San Diego.
Ruiz was talking to his girlfriend around 2 a.m. in the 500 block of Woodlawn Avenue. She was outside his truck and they were talking about a phone when Guadarrama walked up to the driver’s window and got into the conversation.
Ruiz told Guadarrama to butt out of the discussion, but instead Guadarrama pulled out a gun and shot him twice in the head, said Deputy District Attorney Hector Jimenez. Ruiz died immediately.
Lewis ordered Guadarrama to pay $4,300 for Ruiz’s funeral costs and fined him $4,270 last month. She gave Guadarrama credits for 537 days spent in jail since his arrest six days after the shooting, according to court records.
