The Castle Park High School football team opened the season with a poor offensive showing in an 8-6 non-league loss to neighborhood rival Hilltop. With a week off to regroup, the reigning Metro-Pacific League champions appear to have made up for their sluggish start with last Friday’s 41-38 non-league victory at Santana.
“It was a wild game,” CPHS head coach Hans Graham conceded. “We got the ball with three minutes left and scored. We gave them the ball with 50 seconds left and held them.
“It was a big win for us, a great win. It got the kids believing in what they can do.”
It was a blockbuster night for Trojan senior quarterback Angelo Trujillo, who completed 14 of 20 passing attempts for 358 yards with three touchdowns and no interception. He also scored two rushing touchdowns to command a quarterback rating of 152.1.
Senior receiver Luq Barcoo caught 10 aerials for 218 yards and one touchdown. Nick Williams had three receptions for 132 yards and two scores.
Castle Park also scored three rushing touchdowns. Trujillo rushed 14 times for 83 yards, with two scores, while senior Miguel Flores rushed 14 times for 55 yards and one touchdown.
Barcoo also had four carries for 37 yards and tacked on 25 kick-return yardage to finish the game with 280 all-purpose yards. He also led the team defensively with six tackles and one sack.
Trujillo racked up 441 yards in total yards. Big plays in the game went to Williams (61 yards) and Barcoo (44 yards).
The Trojans piled up 185 rushing yards in the game en route to amassing a staggering 568 all-purpose yards.
Hassan Montiel had one sack to match Barcoo. Arthur Zertuche averaged 44 yards on seven kickoffs and collected four kicking points in the game.
The Sultans (2-1) also clicked offensively. Senior quarterback Frankie Gutierrez completed 25 of 43 attempts for 401 yards with three touchdowns and no picks. However, the Sultans were less successful on the ground with 85 yards on 33 carries.
Junior Bobby Wallace gained 45 yards on 18 carries while Gutierrez gained 40 yards on 15 carries.
Gutierrez finished the game with 441 yards in total offense.
Senior Adam Childress led the hosts with nine catches for 161 yards and two touchdowns while junior Aidan Rasmusson had six catches for 95 yards. Wallace caught three passes for 64 yards and one touchdown.
Childress had the longest play from scrimmage in the game for the Sultans with a pass reception for 75 yards while Gutierrez ripped off one 31-yard carry.
Santana entered the game riding the momentum of consecutive blowout wins over Southwest (54-0 on Aug. 28) and Kearny (59-19 on Sept. 4), but was cooled down by the Castle Park defense.
“We shut their guy (Gutierrez) down,” Graham said. “He passed the ball well but he couldn’t run on us.”
Gutierrez had 14 rushes for just nine yards after subtracting his one big run.
The Trojans were scheduled to host a team from Canada Friday, Sept. 18, but instead will play a non-league game at Capistrano Valley. Kick-off is 7 p.m.
Capo Valley, a school with an enrollment of more than 2,900 students in Mission Viejo, is 2-1 on the season. The Cougars are coming off a 58-21 loss at San Juan Hills.
“Hopefully, we can feed off this win (over Santana) and give them a great game. They’re a great team.”
Santana will host the Montgomery Aztecs (0-3) in a bid to return to the winning column on Friday, Sept. 18. Kick-off is also 7 p.m.
The Aztecs are coming off a 27-26 overtime loss to visiting Clairemont last Friday.
On the season Gutierrez has thrown for 657 yards and seven touchdowns.
