The Castle Park Trojans opened defense of their Metro-Pacific League championship with a 34-0 homecoming victory last Friday against the visiting San Ysidro Cougars.
It wasn’t too difficult to find the difference-maker in the game: Trojan quarterback Angelo Trujillo.
Trujillo led the winners by throwing two touchdown passes while running for one score. He also kicked two field goals and tacked on four successful extra-point conversions.
“He did a great job,” CPHS head coach Hans Graham explained. “Luq Barcoo (the team’s leading scorer with 10 touchdowns) went down with an injury early in the game and Angelo knew he had to step it up, just like the rest of the team did.”
Trujillo completed 12 of 24 passing attempts for 165 yards. Both of his touchdown passes went to Anthony Navarro (six catches, 93 yards).
Ray Morfin also scored one rushing touchdown.
Castle Park rushed for 186 yards on 25 attempts to finish the game with 351 total offensive yards.
Navarro had three carries for 63 yards and had one kick-off return for 37 yard while Trujillo rushed seven times for 38 yards. Miguel Flores gained 31 yards on seven carries.
Flores also led the Trojans with eight tackles and made one fumble recovery; Diego Ibarra and Daniel Arana each recorded one sack.
The Cougars (0-1 in league, 0-7 overall) have yet to beat Castle Park in nine meetings between the teams.
The Trojans (4-4 overall) next play at Montgomery (1-7 overall) in the teams’ annual Warrior Bowl.
The Aztecs are coming off their first win of the season last Friday after edging visiting Southwest, 23-16, in an overtime tiebreaker.
Montgomery, playing in front of a homecoming crowd, scored the game’s first touchdown after converting on a fake punt when quarterback Israel Dorame hit receiver Christian Arroyo down to the Southwest 17-yard line. The Aztecs scored on the next play when Dorame hit Anthony Parra for a 6-0 lead.
The hosts tacked on a field goal to up their lead to 9-0 but the Raiders countered on an interception, fourth down conversion and touchdown pass by Pastor Quime. The visitors then scored on a two-point conversion to draw within a point on the scoreboard.
Southwest (0-1 in league, 0-8 overall) scored 16 total points in the fourth quarter. Ariel Osuna scooped up a loose ball on the ensuing kickoff to put the Raiders ahead by seven points 16-9.
Southwest recorded its third interception of the game to stop a potential Montgomery scoring drive in the red zone with time running out. But the Aztecs rallied to send the game into overtime when Anthony Bugarin stripped the ball from the Southwest ball-carrier near midfield and scored on the play.
In the overtime tiebreaker, Dorame scored on an eight-yard run to put Montgomery up by a touchdown and Aztec defender Patrick Woolstenhulme then grabbed an interception in the end zone to deny the Raiders a chance to score.
San Ysidro plays at Southwest on Friday in a match-up of winless teams.
