Chula Vista High School assistant roller hockey coach Caroline Talavera had everything to embrace about this year’s Bonita Optimist Pam Wiser Classic tournament that faced off last Saturday and wrapped up Monday at Castle Park High School.
Talavera played two seasons for the Spartans, though not under Wiser, the tournament’s namesake. However, Talavera greatly benefitted from the legacy established by the former CVHS head coach.
Wiser, who passed away in April 2011, was a role model for female student-athletes. The Spartans quickly accumulated a sizable number of females playing on their roster under Wiser’s guidance and came to celebrate that.
As girls gained a notable presence on the playing court, it opened up opportunities on other teams and the number of female student-athletes playing roller hockey mushroomed throughout the Sweetwater district.
While there were a few girls playing roller hockey prior to Wiser becoming a head coach, it was Wiser’s visibility as a head coach that paved the way for an increasing number of female student-athletes to gravitate toward playing roller hockey.
Talavera, as a coach, is now carrying on Wiser’s work as a role model for a new generation of female inline hockey players.
“One year we had five girls on the team,” explained Talavera, who also competed in lacrosse and field hockey at CVHS. “Most of them were my friends. I had played with most of them in other sports. It was like playing with (all of) them on the same team. It was comforting to know there were other girls on the team.”
Talavera said she preferred roller hockey over the two other sports she played in high school.
“I liked the atmosphere more than the other sports,” she said. “It pushed you more than in any other sport. All the teams are here and you know everyone —they’re your friends and also your rivals. It was fun.”
Talavera said the presence of girls on coed teams actually helps motivate the male student-athletes.
“It challenges the boys to not let their guard down,” she explained. “You know, they see a girl and they expect it will be an easy game. So, they don’t see it coming when suddenly the guy is on the floor and the girl is skating past them.”
Talavera competed in the inaugural Pam Wiser Classic in 2014 and retains fond memories of the event. “It was good competition and I was also one of the top skaters (in the skills competition),” she said. “It was fun. Everyone was in their corner (team areas) but also together, too.”
Talavera’s involvement with the tournament came full circle this year by helping coach Chula Vista to this year’s championship game — the second consecutive year the Spartans have made the finals.
The Eastlake Titans, braced by female standout defender Percilla Mayer, shut out Chula Vista, 4-0, to win the Gold Division title.
EHS head coach Ron Cole called the two-day event an “amazing tournament.”
“It was fun and very competitive,” he said. “I was really impressed by the good sportsmanship showed by all the teams throughout the tournament. It was fun to be a part of it.”
And also winning it. The Titans became the third team in as many years to win the tournament title, following in the footsteps of Bonita Vista in 2014 and Otay Ranch in 2015.
Eastlake finished 4-0-1 to improve to 10-2-1 on the season. The Titans finished 2-0-1 in pool play with 5-0 wins over Southwest and Bonita Vista and a 1-1 draw against Hilltop. Eastlake then defeated Mesa League rival Otay Ranch, 4-1, in the semifinals.
Chula Vista edged west side rival Hilltop, 2-1, in the semifinals to meet the Titans in the championship game.
All coaches commented on how balanced the tournament pairings turned out. Games throughout the two-day event were close, with nine contests settled by two goals or less, including seven by one-goal (three in overtime).
Newcomer Jake Powell, an ice hockey standout, led Eastlake with three goals in the semifinal win over Otay Ranch.
Hector Garcia scored both goals in Chula Vista’s semifinal win over Hilltop, including the game-winner with 3:45 left, after the teams had skated to a scoreless first half.
Chula Vista netminder Cruz Salas stopped the first 10 shots he faced in the championship game before Seiya Hagiya finally sneaked a shot past him to give the Titans a 1-0 lead. Eastlake netminder Kevin Hooks stopped a penalty shot by Spartan leading scorer Hector Garcia to preserve the one-goal lead through the first half (teams played two 20-minutes halves).
The Titans sealed the tournament championship by scoring three goals in the second half. Newcomer Luke Killeen, another skilled ice hockey player, scored to double the Titan lead to 2-0. Jose Campos followed with a goal to make it 3-0 and Sean Layton put the finishing touch on the title game victory by scoring the game’s final goal. Brandon Benson assisted on all three second-half goals.
Hooks played well in the second half, making 15 saves to post the shutout win. Eastlake allowed just two goals in its five tournament games while posting three shutout wins.
Teams were paired in cross-over semifinals based on pool play finish. The top two teams in each pool advanced to the Gold Division semifinals while the bottom two teams in each pool advanced to the Silver Division semifinals.
Andrew Tesner’s half-court shot with 3:52 left in overtime catapulted Hilltop to a 5-4 overtime win over Otay Ranch in the Gold Division third-place game. Danny Godinez led the Lancers with two goals and two assists in the game.
David Mendez led Otay Ranch with a goal and three assists.
Chula Vista coach Matt Diaz was pleased by his team’s performance, especially in Monday’s playoff round.
“We did great even though it was a 4-0 loss in the championship game,” he said. “The kids played even better than they did in the Hilltop game. We showed a lot of improvement from Saturday.”
Garcia had five goals on the weekend to pace the Spartans, who finished 3-2 in tourney play.
Third place Game
Hilltop 5, Otay Ranch 4 (OT)
The Mesa League-leading Mustangs held three leads in the game before succumbing in sudden-victory overtime to the Lancers. Otay Ranch moved out to early leads of 1-0 and 2-1 on goals by Hector Sanchez and Niko Trottier. But Hilltop responded with unanswered goals by Danny Godinez and Ivan Corona to lead 3-2 at halftime.
David Mendez scored the opening goal of the second half to tie the game 3-3 and Aaron Marientes added another goal to push the Mustangs ahead 4-3. But Godinez scored the final goal of regulation play to send the game into overtime knotted 4-4.
The overtime featured three-on-three skating. Hilltop’s Andrew Tesner ended the game with 3:52 left in the five-minute period when he ripped off a half-court shot that evaded Otay Ranch netminder Gabe Sosa. Godinez drew the assist on the game-winner while Andres Corrales picked up the win in the net for the Lancers.
Esteban Martinez scored Hilltop’s first goal of the game while Godinez finished the game with two goals and two assists.
The fourth place Mustangs were without their top two scorers on the season in the tournament: freshman ice hockey player Sean Devaney and team captain Ricky Portilla.
Hilltop finished pool play 2-0-1 with victories against Bonita Vista (6-2) and Southwest (9-1) and the 1-1 draw against Eastlake to earn the No. 1 seed from Pool A. Josh Fischer had a career breakout game with four goals and four assists in the win over Southwest while Tesner contributed three goals and two assists.
Otay Ranch finished 3-0 to earn the No. 1 seed from Pool B after skating past Chula Vista (3-0), Mar Vista (3-1) and Sweetwater (4-0). Goaltender J.T. Santiago recorded both shutout wins for the Mustangs while Marientes picked up four goals in the three games and Mendez had two goals and two assists.
Fifth Place Game
Sweetwater 3, Bonita Vista 1
Phillip Brandon scored two goals and Marco Salazar scored once to lead the Red Devils past the Barons. Sweetwater built a 2-1 lead in the first half, with Brandon scoring an insurance goal in the second half. Nick Stark scored the lone goal for Bonita Vista.
Brandon earned recognition as the fastest skater and shootout winner in the tournament’s skills competition.
The Devils finished 1-2 in pool play and tacked on two wins in Monday’s Silver Division playoffs. Sweetwater topped Southwest, 4-2, in the semifinals behind a goal and assist each by Adrian Rivera and Salazar. Brandon also scored once in the semifinal win.
Bonita Vista edged Mar Vista, 5-4, in overtime in Monday’s semifinals to advance to the Silver Division championship game (fifth place in the tournament). Dylan Riley led the Barons with three goals in the semifinal win, including the game-winner with 2:21 left in the overtime period, while Alex Tran scored twice.
Matthew Custodio picked up two assists, including one on the game-winner, as Bonita Vista erased a 3-2 Mar Vista first-half lead.
Eloy Rodriguez scored all four Mariner goals.
Bonita Vista finished 1-2 in pool play while Mar Vista and Southwest both finished 0-3 in pool play.
The Barons defeated Southwest, 4-0, behind two goals and one assist by Custodio to claim its sole win in pool play.
Seventh Place Game
Mar Vista 3, Southwest 2 (OT)
Eloy Rodriguez scored two goals and one assist to lead the victorious Mariners, with teammate Brian Suarez adding a goal and assist, including the overtime winner. Angel Bonilla scored twice to lead Southwest, which also received assists from Nick Dowdle and Kayleigh Andrew.

Falcons fly past Barons, 15-2, in non-league match-up
CASTLE PARK HIGH SCHOOL, Jan. 20, 2016 – Turn the clock back to the final game of the 2001-02 season and it was a different story, but the tide has turned for the Barons over the intervening years. Such was evidenced in Wednesday’s non-league match-up.
Scripps Ranch and La Jolla Country Day were the first non-Sweetwater district teams welcomed into the Metro Conference’s fledgling roller hockey circuit. They entered the conference in its second year and the Falcons quickly established themselves as the team to beat with the top regular season record. But the Barons – winners of the first Kiwanis Cup tournament the year before – weren’t too far behind, and coach Keith Quigley’s troops made up ground quickly in the playoffs by halting the Falcons’ march through the second Kiwanis Cup tournament with a heart-stopping overtime win to claim the title.
Both programs continue to roll forward. Scripps Ranch first skated onto the floor in 1996 while Bonita Vista started its program two years later.
The Falcons won the teams’ latest meeting on the floor, 15-2, in a game that was more competitive than the final score indicated.
Scripps Ranch encountered a determined Baron squad and, in fact, fell behind 1-0 on Matt Custodio’s first strike and led just 2-1 at the end of the period on a pair of goals by Matt Gauthier.
Gauthier would go on to post eight points in the game on three goals and five assists as the Falcons soared from their nest by scoring nine unanswered goals to lead 9-1 at the end of the second period. After Custodio’s game-opener, Scripps Ranch scored 15 of the game’s next 16 goals.
Cody Sherman collected three goals and three assists to complement Gauthier’s explosive play-making performance while Jimmy Musser contributed a hat trick, Wesley Rim added two goals and one assist and Scott Rhyne, Jesse Lycan and Leo Gaffrey each scored one goal. Rudy Lee finished the game with one assist.
Alex Tran scored the Barons’ second goal. Custodio picked up the assist on that to finish the game with a goal and assist.
Casey Wu earned the goaltending victory while both Ashley Massarene and Naya Romero saw action between the pipes for Bonita Vista. Massarene got the start and took the loss.
The win raised Scripps Ranch’s season record to 6-4. The Falcons are 2-3 in Central League play.
Bonita Vista (0-4 in Mesa League play) dropped to 1-7 overall with the non-league loss.
Scripps Ranch could find the final half of the season quite rewarding. Among the Falcons’ wins are decisions over both Rancho Bernardo and Cathedral Catholic, the conference’s two top-ranked teams.
But veteran Scripps Ranch coach Greg Friedman isn’t putting all the eggs in his basket quite yet. The Falcons – and many other North County-based teams – are often different teams on the playing court without their complement of ice hockey players.
“It’s when you have your ice guys (that matters),” Friedman said. “We beat RB and Cathedral when we had them and we lost to St. Augustine when we didn’t.”
The Falcons expect to have their ice hockey players on board by the time the Kiwanis Cup playoffs face off in late February – as will the rest of the teams in the conference, including those on Sweetwater district teams.
Friedman said the Falcons are in the process of rebuilding to their former glory. Scripps Ranch remains the only team to post a 22-0 record in conference history.
“It’s getting fun again,” Friedman explained. “I had all these kids at Marshall (Middle School) – since the eighth grade – I’ve had most of these guys three to four years. We have other kids coming who are ice hockey guys. It’s easy to coach when you have talent.”
Red Devils add another tally to win column
CASTLE PARK HIGH SCHOOL, Jan. 20, 2016 – The Sweetwater Red Devils are on some kind of tear after defeating Southwest, 9-2, in a South Bay League game on Wednesday. The Red Devils picked up thier fifth win in seven games on Wednesday. Sweetwater (6-7 overall) defeated Mar Vista 8-3, on Jan. 15 and added three more wins over the weekend in the Bonita Optimist Pam Wiser Classic prior to chalking up the win over South Bay League rival Southwet.
Phillip Brandon powered the latest SuHi win by collecting six goals (all consecutive for a double hat trick). Nick Dowdle and Augustine Munoz scored goals for the Raiders (2-10 overall)
Spartans start slow, finish fast in 8-1 South Bay League win over Castle Park
CASTLE PARK HIGH SCHOOL, JAN. 20, 2016 – Chula Vista coach Matt Diaz admitted if there is one negative thing about his team in an otherwise plethora of positives this season, it is the Spartans’ penchant for slow starts. But he certainly can’t complain about this team’s fast finishes.
Chula Vista found itself down, 1-0, to Castle Park in a South Bay League game on Wednesday. No problem. The Spartans scored the remaining eight goals over the ensuing two periods to win 8-1 and, in the process, improve to 8-1 on the season, 6-0 in league play.
Chula Vista received goals from five players in the victory, including four by team scoring leader Hector Garcia and a goal and two assists from Jesse Amador.
The Spartans scored four goals in the second period and four goals in the third period to secure the win.
South Bay League Standings
Chula Vista Spartans 6-0
Castle Park Trojans 2-3
Sweetwater Red Devils 2-3
Mar Vista Mariners 2-4
Southwest Raiders 2-4
Lancers score 3-2 upset win over Titans in key Mesa League contest
CASTLE PARK HIGH SCHOOL, Jan. 21, 2016 — Both the Hilltop Lancers and Eastlake Titans have enjoyed –or rather, fretted through – their fair share of close match-ups in the first half of the 2015-16 CIF-Metro Conference season. Predictably, their Mesa League encounter on Thursday evening was close once more, but with a different outcome.
Hilltop won 3-2 to knock off Eastlake for the first time in three meetings this season.
“We have a bunch of players who don’t have that much experience, so it’s great to see them play and improve,” said Hilltop defenseman Danny Godinez, who recorded one assist in the game. “We’re having the time of our lives. They’re getting more experience.”
Eastlake captured the teams’ first match-up by a score of 6-5 on Dec. 15. The teams then skated to a 1-1 standoff in pool play of last weekend’s Bonita Optimist Pam Wiser Classic. The Titans, in fact, had to rally to tie the game.
Eastlake went on to win the tournament title while Hilltop finished in third place. Obviously, the Lancers were motivated for Thursday’s contest, and the proverbial third time indeed proved to be the charm.
Hilltop built a 2-0 lead on goals by Andrew Tesner and Gerardo Barragan. Luke Killeen, assisted by Brandon Benson, scored the only goal of the second period to halve the deficit for the Titans. Eastlake then knotted the score, 2-all, on a goal by Sean Layton midway in the third period.
Layton let a low buzzer loose that caught Hilltop goaltender Andres Corrales unable to see the puck because he was screened by a pair of players along the line of sight.
The game remained deadlocked for several tense minutes and the Titans appeared to have the better of play before the Lancers struck for what proved to be the game-winner with 4:01 to play in the third period.
Eduardo Arguello brought the puck out from behind the net and back-handed a shot that bounced off the far post past EHS netminder Kevin Hooks.
The Titans went back on the attack in search of the equalizer but Corrales came up with several more big stops en route to posting 20 saves in the game. The Lancers kept up enough pressure to prevent Eastlake from getting an extra attacker on the floor in the final minute.
“Mainly, we focused on defense and, whenever we had a chance, we took a shot from up top,” Godinez explained.
The win raised Hilltop’s league record to 2-3 while Eastlake dropped to 3-2 in league play. Otay Ranch (10-4 overall) continues to lead the Mesa League standings with a 4-0 league mark.
The Lancers, who finished 3-1-1 in last weekend’s tournament, improved to 8-4-1 on the season. Eastlake saw its overall record dip to 10-3-1.
Hilltop, which defeated Otay Ranch 5-4 in overtime for third place in last weekend’s tournament, could be a factor in determining which team claims this year’s league title.
Eastlake defeated Otay Ranch, 4-1, in the tournament semifinals.
Mustangs stop Mariners, return to win column
CASTLE PARK HIGH SCHOOL, Jan. 21, 2016 – After suffering back-to-back losses in Monday’s Bonita Optimist Pam Wiser Classic Gold Division playoffs to a pair of Mesa League rivals, the Otay Ranch Mustangs returned to the win column by defeating the Mar Vista Mariners, 6-2, in a non-league encounter.
Otay Ranch rolled out to a 2-0 lead in the first period and tacked on three more goals to lead 5-2 in the early moments of the third period, but were tested throughout the contest by a determined Mar Vista squad that was energized by two late goals.
Freshman AAA ice hockey player Sean Devaney paced the Mustangs to their 10th win of the season by collecting three goals and one assist while teammate Aaron Marientes chipped in with a pair of goals. Paul Chavez scored one goal while Donovan Lazo and David Mendez each were credited with one assist. J.T. Santiago finished the game with 15 saves.
Eloy Rodriguez scored twice in the latter part of the third period to pull Mar Visa to within three goals on the scoreboard at 5-2. But Devaney quickly erased any further thoughts of a Mariner comeback by scoring his hat trick goal.
Jake Dilliott made 25 saves in the MV net to keep his team within striking distance for most of the game.
Mesa League Standings
Otay Ranch Mustangs 4-0, 10-3
Eastlake Titans 3-2, 10-3-1
Hilltop Lancers 2-3, 8-4-1
Bonita Vista Barons 0-4, 3-10
