This year, among the thousands of costumed characters meandering though the San Diego Convention Center during Comicon, will anyone catch a glimpse of “The Opportunist”?
Despite the negative connotations, “The Opportunist” isn’t a creepy, under-handed villain intent on ruining lives for the sake of world domination and power. After all, the Republican National Convention in Wisconsin was last week and Democrats don’t meet in Chicago until August.
Rather, T.O’s origin story, it’s said, is steeped in American history and may correspond to the arrival of settlers on this continent.
“The Opportunist” sees an opportunity to change events or surroundings and employs various means to bring about that change. T.O is not to be confused with his cousin Capitalist Boy who employs some of the same techniques of persuasion but typically for his own personal gain.
This weekend “The Opportunist” might find themselves wandering the halls and exhibits of the annual comic book and pop culture event during the day, and visiting after parties and power drinks by night. While doing so, they’d be whispering a little question to event organizers: Are you happy with what San Diego has to offer?
It’s just a question but in that query the seeds are planted that perhaps it’s time for a change.
It’s no secret COMICON organizers haven’t been happy with San Diego hoteliers lately. In short they’re concerned that room rates are just too high to be attractive to the average fan who wants to come in from out of town and enjoy the long weekend without having to worry about being priced out of lodging.
They’ve agreed to stay in San Diego until 2026, after that we’ll see what happens.
Coincidentally Chula Vista’s Gaylord Resort and Convention Center is opening in 2025.
Surely by 2027 and beyond they’ll be looking for a marquee event to solidify their reputation regionally. Maybe there’s some room for friendly conversations this weekend and beyond.
Getting COMICON to set up shop in a virtually brand new facility on Chula Vista’s bayfront may be just the case “The Opportunist” has been waiting for.
