The 2011 Bonita Vista High School softball team, with a 24-0 start to this season and a 25-game consecutive league winning streak, is guaranteed to enter its name in the San Diego Section record book. Just how high the Barons place in various categories remains to be seen.
But the numbers thus far are impressive.
Bonita Vista extended its season opening winning streak to 24 games following last Saturday’s 10-0 non-league victory against visiting Valhalla. Prior to that, the Barons opened Mesa League play with 10-2 and 13-0 victories against Chula Vista in a home-and-home series.
Jennifer Hartman tamed Valhalla’s bats on a one-hitter after pitching no-hit ball in her four innings of work against the Spartans the previous day.
Anissa Pinedo drove in four runs on three hits to highlight the 11-hit offensive attack against Valhalla. Alex Vargas had two hits and two RBI. Hannah Flippen, Kayla Jordan and Celinna Cosio all scored two runs.
The game was called after five innings against Valhalla.
Cosio and Pinedo each drove in three runs in the first game against Chula Vista while Jaycee Carlson and Carolyn Wright each collected two RBI. Cosio slammed two homers in the game. Flippen and Vargas combined to scatter seven hits.
Flippen had four hits in last Friday’s contest, including two doubles. Pinedo led the Barons with three RBI while Andrea Lara and Vargas each drove in two runs.
Flippen allowed only one hit in the one inning she worked as her team scored yet another run-rule victory.
“We’re doing well,” BVHS coach John Carlson said. “We’re still trying to take the approach of one game at a time. The Mesa League has some good teams. We have some rivalries. We’re taking nothing for granted. We have a talented group.”
Whether the 2011 BV squad will rewrite history is another matter. The 2002 Baron squad went 31-0 before losing to Poway in the San Diego Section semifinals. Bonita Vista finished 31-1, ranked fourth in the nation.
