The number of the San Diego Section’s undefeated high school football teams continues to shrink each week. Four weeks into the 2011 pigskin campaign, there are 17 teams in the region that have yet to taste defeat. Fourteen are unbeaten and untied, while three have been tied once.
Within the Metro Conference, only two teams remain unbeaten as the midpoint of the season approaches. The top-ranked Eastlake Titans improved to 4-0 following last Friday’s 25-7 non-league victory at Steele Canyon while the Mar Vista Mariners hiked their record to 3-0 following a 44-0 shutout win at Monte Vista in another non-league match-up.
Eastlake is among only four 4-0 teams at this point of the season in the section, joining the St. Augustine Saints, Santana Sultans and Westview Wolverines.
Eastlake continues to hold down the No. 1 ranking among all section teams and among the section’s Division I squads while sixth-ranked St. Augustine is top-ranked among Division III teams.
The fifth-ranked Mt. Miguel Matadors, who host Sweetwater this Friday in a non-league tilt, are 3-0 and ranked first among Division IV teams.
The fourth-ranked Poway Titans and eighth-ranked San Pasqual Golden Eagles, who fought to a 17-all tie last Friday, both rank as top Division I challengers in the weekly rankings.
Eastlake hosts seventh-ranked Cathedral Catholic (3-1) this Friday, and another victory could very well solidify the Titans hold on the section’s No. 1 spot entering Metro-Mesa League play. Meanwhile, a win by the Dons could catapult them ahead of arch rival St. Augustine.
Mar Vista also will have its undefeated start challenged when its hosts likewise unbeaten Grossmont (2-0-1) on Friday,
The section’s undefeated teams, by playoff enrollment division, include:
Division I: Eastlake (4-0), Poway (3-0-1), San Pasqual (3-0-1), Grossmont (2-0-1)
Division II: Westview (4-0), Patrick Henry (3-0)
Division III: St. Augustine (4-0), Mar Vista (3-0)
Division IV: Santana (4-0), Madison (3-0), Mt. Miguel (3-0)
Division V: Bishop’s (3-0), La Jolla Country Day (3-0), Mountain Empire (3-0), San Diego Jewish Academy (1-0)
Eight-man: Kuyper Prep (3-0), Maranatha Christian (3-0)
Eight is enough
National City’s Kuyper Prep Admirals improved to 2-0 in Sunset League play following last Friday’s 66-0 steam-rollering of Vista Calvary Christian Academy
Ocean View Christian Academy, which dropped a 20-10 decision to the Admirals on Sept. 10, improved to 3-1 on the season following last Friday’s 54-0 victory over visiting Liberty Christian (Huntington Beach). The Patriots evened their league record at 1-1 after defeating Classical Academy of Escondido, 50-32, on Sept. 16.
