The Southwestern College football team recorded its third consecutive victory of the season by defeating visiting Mt. San Jacinto Collete, 20-10, Oct. 1. The Jaguars improved to 3-1 in non-conference play while MSJ dropped to 2-3.
The scoreboard favored the hosts throughout the game. SWC led 7-3 after the first quarter and 17-3 at halftime before taking a 20-7 lead into the final quarter.
Cass White (San Diego HS) opened scoring in the game on a 38-yard run to cap a six-play, 80-yard drive.
MSJ countered with a 36-yard field goal by Jaime Lucio but the Jags tacked on the only 10 points of the second quarter as Jovan Gonzales booted a 22-yard field goal and Patrick Mitchell (Morse) scored on a 22-yard run.
Both of Southwestern’s second quarter scoring drives went the length of the field. Gonzales’ field goal capped a 15-play, 83-yard field march while Mitchell’s TD was the end result of an 86-yard drive.
Gonzales continued a standout showing with a 37-yard field goal with 9:20 left in the third quarter to give him eight points in the game. He also averaged 45.6 yards on five kick-offs.
The Jaguars amassed 396 yards in total offense. Quarterback Brett Nelson (St. Francis) completed 15 of 25 passing attempts for 215 yards. He was intercepted once and sacked three times.
Mitchell rushed 28 times for 134 yards while White had seven carries for 79 yards to lead the SWC rushing attack that netted 181 yards. Marquise Deadwiler (Helix) had six catches for 112 yards, including a 56-yard reception.
Tony Beckett (Willingboro) and Cameron McGee (Bishop Gorman) led the Jags with seven tackles while Nick Floyd (Grossmont), Patrick Jarin (Eastlake) and Tony Marable (Olympian) each had six tackles.
MSJ signal-called Nigel Barksdale was sacked three times and intercepted four times by the Southwestern defense.
The Jags allowed MSJ just 67 net rushing yards in the game and 153 passing yards.
Nathan Drum (Bonita Vista) averaged 38.4 yards on seven punts, including a longest effort of 45 yards.
Southwestern next plays at San Bernardino Valley College on Saturday, Oct. 8, at 6 p.m. SBVC enters the game sporting a 1-3 record and is coming off a 35-14 loss to Citrus.
The Jags kick off East Conference play Oct. 15 at College of the Desert.
