Suspect found incompetent

An 82-year-old Chula Vista man accused of killing his roommate has been found mentally incompetent to stand trial.

A mental competency trial was held for Paul Gary Young, Jr. before San Diego Superior Court Judge Kenneth So on the sole question of whether he could mentally understand court proceedings.

Young is accused of fatally shooting Maya Pawlik, 55, on August 2, 2018, in the home they shared at Terry’s Mobile Home Park on G street in Chula Vista. Deputy District Attorney Jerry Wendricks said Pawlik was shot once in the head and died instantly.

So committed Young to Patton State Hospital for treatment after his ruling.

“If he is ever restored to competence, they will send him back,” said Hendricks in an

e-mail.

Psychiatrists met with Young and evaluated him in the Vista Detention Facility. They wrote reports that were given to So.

It was Young who made a 911 call at 2:45 a.m. to report the shooting. She was found dead on a couch by a Chula Vista Police officer.

Criminal proceedings have been suspended since Oct. 22, and he previously pleaded not guilty. The case never had a preliminary hearing because of the mental competency issue, but that would be held if Young is found mentally competent.
