Summit to focus on training needs

Southwestern College will host the first local industry and education summit, Teaming Today to Impact Tomorrow,” in collaboration with the South County Economic Development Council on Aug. 23 at Mayan Hall.

SCEDC is a local non-profit organization that promotes education and encourages economic development in the South San Diego County region, according to their website.
Their mission closely aligns with the purpose of the summit — to establish effective educational strategies for developing an emerging workforce.

“The main goal is to inform the educational providers in South County as to what the training and program needs are for educators,” School of Continuing Education and Workforce Development Dean Lewis said.

She added that the summit is part of strategic planning efforts to ensure educational standards are aligned with industry needs. Southwestern has opened up the summit to educators from local K-12 schools, community colleges and universities.

There are approximately 400 seats available at the free event, which will take place from 1 to 3 p.m. and feature four keynote speakers who will offer insight about their respective industry.

Keynote speakers will be Action Drone Inc. CEO Darrell Anunciado, manager of government relations for General Dynamics NASSCO Dennis D. Dubard, Living Coast Discovery Center Director Ben Vallejos and Scripps Health Director of Community Relations Monica Montaño.
