Spartans remain on top of Metro-Pacific League standings

At 6-2 and apparently counting, the Chula Vista Spartans are negotiating the heights of both the Metro-Pacific League standings and San Diego Section Division IV rankings.

The Spartans defeated the visiting Southwest Raiders, 47-0, to cap a spirited homecoming performance last Friday. The timely win advanced the Spartans to 2-0 in league play with two games remaining on their regular season schedule – Thursday, Oct. 19, at Castle Park and Friday, Oct. 27 at home against San Ysidro.

A clean slate the rest of the way would launch Chula Vista into the playoffs as an automatic league championship qualifier. A loss along the way might complicate things both in the league standings and division rankings.

Entering Thursday’s potential league championship game matchup against the host Trojans, also 2-0 in league play, the Spartans held down the No. 4 ranking among Division IV teams while Castle Park was ranked ninth among Division V teams.

Twelve teams qualify for the Division IV playoffs but only eight teams qualify for the Division V playoffs. Thursday’s game is thus critical for both teams’ postseason aspirations.

But last Friday’s games were equally critical in creating separation from the other three teams in the league.

CV junior quarterback Izaac Baca completed 12 of 18 passing attempts for 296 yards and four touchdowns — three to senior Jacob Davidson (four catches, 163 yards) and one to junior Elijah Gillespie (five catches, 55 yards).

The Spartans also received two rushing touchdowns – one each by senior Paul Alvarez (two carries, 69 yards) and junior La’Darrione Perkins (four carries, 21 yards).

The hosts broke off several big plays to the delight of the large crowd — Alvarez scored on a 67-yard breakaway run while Davidson caught a 57-yard pass on the run and junior Christian Harwell had a 48-yard reception.

Chula Vista notched 466 total offensive yards in the victory.

Davidson also scored on a two-point rushing conversion to cap a 20-point night.
On the season, Baca has thrown for 1,453 yards and 18 touchdowns with three interceptions while Gillespie has collected 12 receiving touchdowns on 34 catches for 693 yards.

Alvarez has rushed for 533 yards and eight touchdowns while Perkins has rushed for 433 yards and seven touchdowns.

The loss was the second consecutive for the Raiders after a meteoric 5-2 start.

Southwest senior quarterback Justice Pigee demonstrated he could run with the ball but more times than not he was smothered at the line or behind the line of scrimmage by CV defenders.

Senior Ke’Andre Davis keyed the Spartans with eight tackles, including five unassisted, while senior Franky Olmedo had four sacks.

Overall, the hosts recorded nine sacks and two interceptions — both by Alvarez, one for a 17-yard touchdown return. Davis had two sacks while junior Joshua Gogue-Rios, Alvarez and senior Nathan Houck each registered one sack.

Castle Park piled up 547 yards in total offense in sinking host Mar Vista. Senior Sebastian Lozano rushed for 178 yards and four touchdowns one 28 carries to lead the victorious Trojans.

Senior Diego Sandoval rushed for 142 yards on seven carries and one touchdown while junior Christian Haynes rushed for 179 yards on seven carries and had one touchdown.
As a team, Castle Park controlled possession with 535 rushing yards on 46 carries.

Senior Joshua Buggs had a defensive touchdown for the Trojans on an interception return.

Mar Vista generated 145 passing yards with two interceptions and 99 rushing yards with two touchdowns — one each by senior Lah’Darius Crawford (five carries, 48 yards) and senior Lucious Ordaz (five carries, 14 yards). Ordaz completed seven of 17 passes behind center.

Sophomore Ciontae Fewell also scored on a dramatic 73-yard fumble return.
