Southwestern College qualified two runners to compete in this year’s California state championship meet Nov. 18 at Woodward Park in Fresno.
Sophomore Augustin Barreto finished 55 of 176 runners in the men’s field while freshman Xeomara Villalobos finished 110 out of 161 runners in the women’s field.
Barreto (Southwest) recorded a time of 21:36.9 in the four-mile distance while Villalobos (Ontario Colony) timed 21:00.9 for 5K.
Both runners advanced to the state championship meet by meeting qualifying standards at the Southern California regional championship meet Nov. 3 in Central Park.
Barreto finished 67th in 22:39.4 while Villalobos finished 86th in 21:50.1.
The men’s race featured 197 competitors while the women’s field included 187 runners.
Southwestern finished 26th out of 28 scoring teams in the men’s field.
Postseason competition began with the Pacific Coast Conference championship meet Oct. 27 at Guajome Park in Oceanside.
Southwestern’s men’s team finished sixth in the seven team field with 128 points while the women’s team finished eighth out of eight teams with 164 points.
Among individuals, Southwestern had two runners finish in the top 20 percent of the men’s field and two runners finish in the top 30 percent of the women’s field.
Barreto finished 10th in the 66-deep field in 21:49.1 while SWC freshman Oswaldo Felix (San Ysidro) finished 13th in 22:01.8.
Villalobos finished 10th in 21:13.7, followed by Lady Jaguar freshman Alyson Atencio (Otay Ranch) in 18th in 23:02.2.
