The Southwestern College football team enters the second of the its opening trifecta of games against San Diego County opponents 0-1 following the Jaguars’ 45-13 season opening loss to the visiting Palomar Comets on Sept. 3. Next up is longtime local rival San Diego Mesa this Saturday at Devore Stadium.
Kick-off is 6 p.m.
Southwestern will be looking to avoid what happened in its season opener against Palomar. The Comets scored the first three touchdowns of the game and led 28-7 at halftime.
Quarterback Brett Nelson scored SWC’s first touchdown of the 2011 community college season on a two-yard run in the second quarter and Aaron Harris scored on a six-yard run in the third quarter.
However, Palomar scored three more touchdowns between the two scores by the Jags to win in commanding fashion.
Comets quarterback David Fisher had a big night by completing 17 of 25 passing attempts for 213 yards and three touchdowns. He also carried the ball eight times for 54 yards and scored two rushing touchdowns.
Fisher connected with Nigel Westbrooks on passing TDs of eight and 14 yards and also connected with Dallas Butler on an 18-yard scoring pass while Joel Yosevitch scored on a 21-yard run.
Overall, Palomar scored three passing touchdowns and three rushing touchdowns. The Comet defense opened the game by forcing the Jaguars to punt on their first four possessions.
Fisher scored on runs of nine and three yards while Cameron Mercado tacked on a 37-yard field goal to close out scoring in the game.
Butler caught seven passes for 107 yards.
The win was the 14th straight for Palomar over SWC in games dating to 1987.
Southwestern will be looking to even its record against the Olympians, who recorded an impressive 33-30 victory against the visiting Grossmont Griffins in their season opener.
A 44-yard field goal by SDM’s Marcus Diaz with 3:37 to play proved to be the difference in the contest.
The Olympians have added a pair of high profile assistant coaches this season in the guise of former Rancho Bernardo/Lincoln/USDHS coach Ron Hamamoto (defensive coordinator) and former Sweetwater coach Dave Lay (offensive coordinator).
Mesa easily rates to be the most improved JC team in the county this season. The Olympians finished 1-9 last year.
