This 2024-2025 academic year marks a significant milestone in our journey of academic excellence and community engagement. Southwestern College celebrates its 63rd birthday this September, and what better way to honor our legacy than by welcoming a record-breaking number of students to our campuses? With over 21,000 students, we have increased enrollment by 16% compared to fall 2023! In addition, with our academic year ending in May, we allocated almost $35 million in PELL Financial Aid to students. Ensuring students have the fiscal resources to support their college career. Our continued growth and allocation of financial support is a testament to the trust that the South San Diego County community places in us, and we are committed to upholding that trust by offering programs and services that reflect the diversity and resilience of our student body.

As we celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month, we reflect on the profound impact that Hispanic and Latino communities have had on our college and the broader region. Southwestern College has always been a place where diverse cultures come together to learn, grow, and succeed. Our Hispanic Heritage Month celebrations will include a range of events and activities that honor this vibrant community and its contributions to our campus and society, including a “Hispanic Heritage Month” flag-raising event, September 12, from 12 to 1 pm, at the corner of H St. and Otay Lakes Road, at the Chula Vista campus. All are welcome.

For those who are still considering enrolling in classes, it’s not too late! Our Second 8-week sessions begin on October 21, and registration is open now. Whether you are a new student or returning to continue your educational journey, Southwestern College is here to support you every step of the way.

This semester, we are proud to introduce several new initiatives that align with our mission of fostering an inclusive and supportive learning environment. Among these initiatives is the Men of Color Success & Excellence program. This comprehensive initiative is designed to empower men of color by helping them achieve academic excellence, cultivate strong identities, and build a network of support that fosters leadership and success both on campus and beyond. We believe that by providing tailored support, mentorship, and resources, we can help these students overcome challenges and thrive in their academic and professional pursuits.

In addition to the Men of Color Success & Excellence initiative, we are excited to launch the Sangam Learning Community, a program specifically designed to serve our Asian and Pacific Islander students. Sangam, which means “coming together” in Sanskrit, represents the spirit of unity and collaboration that we aim to foster within this community. This program will provide culturally relevant support, academic resources, and a space for students to connect with one another, further broadening our outreach and support across diverse student populations.

Another significant addition to our curriculum is the Native American and Indigenous Studies program. These courses will cover the rich history of indigenous peoples in North America, from prehistory to the Civil War. It is essential that we acknowledge and honor the contributions and experiences of Native American and Indigenous communities, and this program is a step toward that goal. Complementing this academic offering is the Native American Students and Allies Club, which provides a supportive space for students to engage in cultural exchange, advocacy, and community-building.

In closing, I want to express my gratitude to the South San Diego County community for your continued support and trust in Southwestern College. We are committed to providing high-quality education and services that meet the diverse needs of our students. I look forward to the months ahead and all the successes that this academic year will bring.

Mark Sanchez, Ed.D. Superintendent/President Southwestern College
