Southwestern College Reaffirms Commitment to DEIA and Excellence: A Response to National Discussions and Upcoming Open House in Otay Mesa

Dr. Mark Sanchez

In recent days, there have been many questions regarding the national discussions around diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility (DEIA) and the executive order to begin dismantling the U.S. Department of Education, which has caused confusion and uncertainty. Many have questioned what this means for Southwestern College’s operations, our students, and the values that guide us as a campus community. I wanted to acknowledge these concerns, and reaffirm that Southwestern College remains steadfast in its commitment to creating an environment where all students and employees can thrive.

Our administration stands firm in our belief that equity is not about exclusion – it is about ensuring every member of our community has access to the opportunities that allow students and employees to achieve the success to which they aspire. In addition, a reminder that the Department of Education was established by federal law and cannot be eliminated through executive order alone. It is also worth noting that federal funds are a small percentage (approximately 3%) of California’s educational system’s annual budget. While any funding loss presents a challenge, the loss of federal funding would not hinder our ability to operate and serve our students and communities.

As the legal and political landscape continues to shift, Southwestern College leadership will continue to watch developments closely. We will ensure our practices align with the law while staying rooted in our values and provide guidance and support as more information becomes available. We will continue to create an institution that empowers all students and employees to succeed.
On the topic of empowerment, we are excited to open our doors at our Higher Education Center in Otay Mesa’s (HECOM) annual Open House on April 24. Last year over 800 prospective students and their families took the opportunity to explore our campus, especially those who are passionate about pursuing public service and public health careers. The Otay Mesa campus offers specialized programs in Fire Science, Nursing, Emergency Medical Technology/Paramedic, and the Police Academy, alongside over 170 courses in general education and community/business interests.

We are very proud that our Vocational Nursing (VN) Program has been ranked No. 1 in the United States for four of the past five years, according to the National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN). This prestigious ranking, based on national exam pass rates, underscores the quality and rigor of our nursing education and ensures that our nursing students are exceptionally well-prepared to provide the highest quality of care in healthcare settings.

Student, Nathan Barrate is in his last semester of the Associate Degree Nursing program and reflects how HECOM helped him succeed in his education goals. “The Otay Mesa campus is a quieter, smaller community that is focused on their programming. Besides the network of support here, having access to advanced medical technology like the simulation labs has really helped me develop clinical skills, critical thinking and patient care confidence.”

At HECOM simulation labs include life-like mannequins that replicate real patient responses such as breathing, heart beats, and vocalizations that simulate clinical environments. Barrate says this realistic setting helps him to practice clinical skills like IV insertion, blood draws, medication administration and even “mock codes” which allows him to improve his patient care in a safe, controlled setting. He likes the collaborative spirit in working with his peers that allows for feedback and reflection.

We invite you to explore the Otay Mesa campus and facilities, located at 8100 Gigantic Street, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on April 24. This is an excellent opportunity to meet with staff, ask questions about courses and registration, and gather the information you need to take the next step in your educational journey.
We look forward to continuing to serve you and supporting the growth and mission of our vibrant community. For more information about our programs and services, please visit our website at www.swccd.edu or contact us at (619) 482-6482.
