The Southwestern College men’s team posted its first victory of the season by defeating the visiting Miramar Jets, 26-8, Wednesday afternoon. The Jaguars improved to 1-2 on the season.
Jesus Santoyo led SWC with six goals while also collecting three assists and three steals; Nick Howard had five goals, five assists and seven steals while teammates David Carroll and Edward Sanchez each scored four goals.
Carroll also had three assists and three steals.
“After losing 20-5 to Palomar (to drop to 0-2 on the season), this was the type of game that could either tear a team apart or being a team together,” Southwestern head coach Jorge Ortega said. “The guys know we have talent, but it wasn’t the talent that was losing games, it was chemistry.
“We had nine different guys score in this game. I don’t think I’ve ever had that many before. Now, I think the guys have confidence that they don’t have to rely on one player to score all the goals. Hopefully, we can take this momentum into this weekend’s tournament at Mt. SAC.”
The Jaguars build a 12-0 lead before the Jets scored their first goal. In fact, SWC had a 6-0 before Nick Howard, last year’s scoring leader, notched his first goal of the game.
Southwestern led 7-0 at the end of the first quarter and 14-2 at halftime. The Jaguars took a 20-4 lead into the final quarter.
Carlos Lizarraga added two goals, one assist and two steals while Genaro Salido had two goals and three assists.
Juan Garcia led Miramar with five goals.
