One fourth of the way through the 2010 high school football season (regular season and playoffs combined), what can be said about the championship fortunes of the San Diego Section’s South County allotment of teams?
A few observations:
Three area teams remain undefeated through the opening four weeks of non-league play: the defending Division I champion Eastlake Titans (4-0), upstart Calvary Christian Academy Royal Knights (3-0) and Ocean View Christian Academy Patriots (3-0).
Five more South County pigskin squads possess winning records: Castle Park Trojans (3-1), Hilltop Lancers (3-1), Southwest Raiders (3-1), Olympian Eagles (2-1) and Montgomery Aztecs (2-1).
One Metro Conference team has a .500 record: the Otay Ranch Mustangs (2-2).
Five South County teams have losing records: Mar Vista Mari-ners (1-2), Chula Vista Spartans (1-3), San Ysidro Cougars (1-3), Sweetwater Red Devils (0-3), Bonita Vista Barons (0-4) and Mater Dei Catholic Crusaders (0-4).
The top 12 teams in each of the section’s five enrollment divisions qualify for post-season play, with league champions guaranteed automatic entry.
For teams with sub-par records at this point of the season, it’s not exactly time to panic but increased performance is highly recommended.
A look at the section’s divisional standings reveals:
There are seven teams in Division I with winning records, including Eastlake. Five teams remain undefeated: Eastlake (4-0), Grossmont (4-0), San Diego (3-0), Torrey Pines (3-0) and Vista (3-0). A total of nine teams in the division are .500 or better and 15 of the 18 teams have won at least one game.
There are 10 teams in Division II with winning records, including Hilltop. Only two teams remain undefeated: Helix (4-0) and Rancho Bernardo (4-0). A total of 14 teams in the division are .500 or better and 16 of the 18 teams have won at least one game to make this division one of the most competitive for teams in search of a playoff berth.
There are eight teams in Division III with winning records, including Castle Park, Montgomery and Southwest. Only two teams remain undefeated: Mt. Miguel (4-0) and Ramona (4-0). A total of 10 teams in the division are .500 or better and 16 of the 19 teams have won at least one game.
There are six teams in Division IV with winning records, including Olympian. Only three teams remain undefeated: Valley Center (4-0), Madison (3-0) and Santana (3-0-1). A total of eight teams in the division are .500 or better and 11 of the 16 teams have won at least one game.
There are 10 teams in Division V with winning records, including Calvary Christian Academy and Ocean View Christian Academy. Five teams remain undefeated: the Rock Academy (4-0), the Bishop’s School (3-0), Calipatria (3-0), Calvary Christian Academy (3-0) and Ocean View Christian Academy (3-0). A total of 11 teams in the division are .500 or better and 16 of the 21 teams have won at least one game. For small schools wishing to nail down a playoff berth, they will be trudging through a highly competitive mix this season.
Twenty-five teams entered last weekend’s slate of games boasting undefeated records, including eight-man teams. That number is now down to 18 this week … and counting.
