Shooter’s sentence delayed

Abraham Lopez, 27, of Chula Vista, will be sentenced June 6 after he pleaded guilty to a felony charge of discharging a firearm in a grossly negligent manner.

A SWAT team showed up at an apartment complex in the 800 block of Third Avenue on Feb. 8 after a caller warned police that Lopez might drive a car while intoxicated and was possibly suicidal. The caller also said Lopez had access to guns.

When Chula Vista officers arrived, several gun shots were heard. Witnesses said Lopez was shooting a handgun in the air. Lopez went back and forth into his apartment.

Around midnight the SWAT and crisis negotiation team approached the apartment and Lopez was arrested without incident. Traffic had been closed for several hours on Third Avenue but no one was injured.

District Attorney spokeswoman Tanya Sierra said Lopez faces a maximum sentence of three years in prison. He pleaded guilty and the preliminary hearing was canceled. He could also receive local time in jail on probation conditions.

Lopez appeared April 18 for sentencing in Chula Vista Superior Court and it was delayed until June.

Lopez is free on bond.
