The opening round of this year’s San Diego Section girls volleyball playoffs is officially in the record books. Seven South County teams remain in contention to capture elusive CIF divisional championships.
The sixth-seeded Olympian Lady Eagles (28-5) will travel to third-seeded Cathedral Catholic (22-6) for one of four Open Division quarterfinal matchups on Saturday, Nov. 4. Game time is 5 p.m.
Olympian is this year’s Mesa League champion after posting a 10-0 league record. The Lady Eagles, who have advanced to the last two state tournaments, take an eight-game winning streak into the clash against the Lady Dons.
Eastlake, seeded third in the Division I field, topped visiting Mission Vista in a five-game thriller in Wednesday’s opening round to advance to Saturday’s quarterfinals against sixth-seeded Poway in a clash of Titan teams.
Eastlake improved to 22-12 with the 3-2 win over 14th-seeded Mission Vista (13-18). Poway (20-12) eliminated 11th-seeded Otay Ranch (19-13) in Wednesday’s opening round by scores of 25-22, 25-20, 25-22.
Three local squads advanced to Friday’s Division IV quarterfinals. Second-seeded Chula Vista Learning Community Charter (21-1) will host eighth-seeded Mar Vista (15-9) while sixth-seeded Hilltop (18-10) will travel to play third-seeded El Centro Southwest (19-7). Both games feature 5 p.m. starts.
Hilltop defeated 11th-seeed Escondido Charter 25-22, 25-21,25-16 in Tuesday’s opening round while Mar Vista eliminated ninth-seeded San Diego Academy 25-17, 25-23, 25-16.
Chula Vista LCC, the 2016 Division V champion, eliminated 15th-seeded Orange Glen 25-7, 25-9, 25-18 also on Tuesday.
South Bay League champion Chula Vista (17-4) will host seventh-seeded Morse (19-10) in Friday’s Division V quarterfinals.
Fifth-seeded Ocean View Christian (16-4) will test fourth-seeded High Tech High North County (11-5) in another Division V quarterfinal matchup on Friday.
All playoff matches start at 5 p.m.
