Recent inclement weather may be responsible for cars taking a pounding on city streets.
As storms pummel the South County, some motorists are coming across new potholes in their neighborhoods. Others are familiar, albeit filled with water.
A way to track if a pothole in your Chula Vista neighborhood has been reported and fixed is at your fingertips. Act Chula Vista, under the issues tab, lists potholes that have been reported and if they have been fixed. ACT has been in existence for approximately six years.
“Residents are encouraged to report on the ACT Chula Vista app or call (619)397-6000,” said Anne Steinberg, marketing and communications manager with the city of Chula Vista.
“Turnaround time depends on the location and severity of the pothole. Those on high traffic areas will be addressed sooner. They are assessed during the storm and if very bad, either a plate will be placed over it or traffic is diverted around it,” said Diane Howell, public information specialist. “If very severe, a temporary “cool mix” can be laid until permanent repairs can be done. Usually a week later a “hot mix” can be laid until permanent repairs can be done.”
“Last year, 6,300 potholes were repaired. With measure P funds, many more city streets are slated to be repaved this year which should minimize potholes,” she said.
The site will also list the address of the pothole—for instance a pothole measuring 1 foot by 3 foot, in the west bound lane in front of 147 Naples Street was reported. The city acknowledged the report, provided a service number, and routed the document to the appropriate public works staff.
A google map on the site notes the location of specific potholes and their address by clicking on a green bubble.
If an incident has been acknowledged and closed, the website will also indicate if it has been reopened.
For new residents who have not yet learned where the potholes are, the website can highlight where they are, and to potentially avoid them at night or during a rainstorm. This weekend’s weather report does include rain; increased rain fall can cause more potholes.
ACT Chula Vista is now available via a mobile application and online.
