Ronald Steward had his first career touchdown on a 17-yard pass reception from quarterback Chris Garcia, who also rushed for a one-yard score, and Danny Cruz rushed 11 times for 60 yards and scored once to lead the San Ysidro Cougars to a 21-0 non-league victory over the previously undefeated Foothills Christian Knights last Friday at Junior Seau Field in La Mesa.
The win was the second consecutive for the Cougars (2-2) under new head coach Tyler Arciaga.
“We did not play very well in the first half and were able to overcome some adversity (to) win the game,” Arciaga said. “I believe the kids are starting to learn how to win and I am hoping that the euphoric feeling that goes hand-in-hand with winning will help inspire our play throughout the season.”
The Cougar defense held Foothills Christian to 65 total yards, which, according to Arciaga, “really helped us win the field position battle.”
Garcia completed seven of 14 attempts for 114 yards.
The Cougars hope to continue their momentum in Friday’s non-league game against the visiting Santana Sultans (4-0). “They are a really solid team,” Arciaga said.
