I’m sure we can all agree that Chula Vista is a safe city. One need only to observe seniors, families and children out and about on their daily errands and activities without fear for their safety.

But is living in a safe community an entitlement or a privledge? Or is it a basic American right? Do we have the right to expect our elected officials to do their best to make safety a priority? This came in to question at the Aug.13 2019 Chula Vista city council.meeting. When Mayor Mary Salas attemted to ask for support of a resolution to ban the sale of military assault weapons…councilman Mike Diaz and councilwomanman Jill Galvez voted ‘no’. But why? All Americans live in the shadow of gun violence. Do Diaz and Galvez believe El Paso, Dayton type massacres could not happen here? Wasn’t the Poway Synagog shooting just a few months ago? Voting against common sense gun safety legislation raises questions about council members Diaz and Galvez priorities. The safety of Chula Vista residents and all Americans should come first.
