National City residents and National City employees have an opportunity to show off their photography skills in a photo contest. The photo selected will grace the cover of the city’s budget for fiscal year 2020.
“The picture must reflect a National City building, site, event or National City employees,” said Mark Roberts, director of finance. “Electronic files are preferred but we can accept hard copies that are high resolution. “
The subject matter of the photo can be wide ranging. Previous years have included people and places.
“We’ve had it (the contest) for several years,” said Mayor Alejandra Sotelo Solis. “It’s really about the beauty and historical perspective that we have in National City.”
The mayor cited the Olivewood trees, flowers, mom and pop stores, school sites and historical homes as potential subject matter.
Rules for submitting a photo include the picture must be in color, no professional or copyrighted photos are permitted, and up to five pictures may be submitted per person but with a separate form for each photo. Previous photos submitted but not chosen can be resubmitted for consideration. All photos submitted become the property of the city of National City.
The photo will not be published until the budget is adopted.
“The contest ends May 27,” said Roberts. “The photo will be published in August or September when the budget is adopted.
“We have a panel of three judges,” said Roberts. The identity of the photographer is anonymous until the winner is selected. The judges are city employees. There is no monetary prize.
The competition, in previous years, has not been fierce.
“We’ve only had a handful submitted,” said Roberts. “More would be nice.”
To enter complete the entry form and submit it with the picture to the City of National City, Department of Finance at City Hall, 1243 National City Boulevard, National City, or Finance@NationalCity.CA.gov .
