OnStage continues fundraising

As part of its Raise4Plays Giving Campaign, OnStage Playhouse is set for its world premiere of Emmy winner Salomón Maya’s “Mugre” running Sept. 1-24. All tickets for “Mugre” will be donation based, allowing patrons to secure seats online for any amount, with a minimum of $10. Pay-what-you-want seats can be purchased online, or at the door on a first-come, first-serve basis. This world premiere has been 100% created in the walls of OnStage Playhouse.

Maya, who has worked for more than two years on this story, is a Chula Vista native, two-time Emmy awarded producer, and San Diego Copywriting Advertising Award Winner.

“I wrote ‘Mugre’ to speak directly to my culture and beautiful South Bay community—the duality of living in a vibrant border town where speaking two languages wasn’t a luxury but rather a necessity. I’m so proud that ‘Mugre’ makes its professional debut at such an intimate space like OnStage and, best yet one that speaks directly to the people walking the streets of Downtown Chula Vista,” said Maya in a press release.

“Mugre” tells the story of Pancho, Jerónimo, and Pato, three hardworking men toiling on the backbreaking drying line of a South San Diego Car Wash as they fight management, customers, and each other. One day, they encounter an oncoming storm in the form of a fiery and determined Isabela searching for something missing from her past. It’s a story about life’s choices, generational differences, family, TJ tacos, and new car scent.

A 2017 finalist for the Latinx New Play Festival held at the San Diego Repertory Theater, “Mugre” will be directed by OnStage Playhouse Artistic Director James P. Darvas.

“Salomón and I have been working on ‘Mugre’ for over two years, with four full-fledged workshops. This stunning story of culture, family, and friendship will no doubt strike a relevant chord with audiences of varying ages and ethnicities,” stated Darvas.
