The Xolos scored two goals and did not allow their rivals, Club Leon FC, any in securing a win Friday night at Estadio Caliente.
The victory puts them on top of the Liga MX table after five games with 12 points.
Second place Pachuca also has 12 points but a weaker goal differential.
But the victory was far from perfect, with Coach Miguel Herrera suggesting the Xolos did not play their best that night and were fortunate Leon did not finish their chances on goal.
“The team has been assertive even today in a game in which I think we didn’t play as well,” Herrera said in the post match news conference. “There were parts of the game in which gave the ball away to an opponent who really tried. But (Federico) Vilar had a great night. We were lucky they hit some posts but the important thing is that we gained points,” he said.
Dayro Moreno scored for the Xolos in the 14th minute of the game after Leon was called for a penalty and Aviles Hurtado gave the team its second goal in the 83rd minute.
The Xolos travel to 16th place Necaxa (0-3-2) Saturday in a game that kicks off at 7 p.m.
