The Olympian High School football team is flying high and, like the Eagles they are, is flying right into Friday afternoon’s key non-league match-up at Point Loma.
Kick-off is 3:30 p.m.
The Eagles are 3-1 and are coming off an impressive 43-20 non-league win at Lincoln last Friday; Point Loma is 3-1 and is bidding to crack the San Diego Section’s top 10 rankings.
Both teams are on three-game winning streaks. The game is pivotal in terms of seeding for the upcoming Division I playoffs.
Olympian head coach Paul Van Nostrand called last Friday’s win over Lincoln a “good solid team win.”
“All three phases contributed toward victory,” the Eagles head coach explained. “Point Loma has a solid team and will be a big test for us.”
The Pointers whipped host Serra, 62-7, last Friday.
The Eagles led Lincoln, 16-0, after the first quarter and built a 22-7 halftime lead.
Michael Kipling (19 carries, 110 yards) scored three rushing touchdowns to lead the visitors while Noah Lacsina (32 carries, 144 yards), Brennen Vicente (three carries, 12 yards) and quarterback Garry Cannon (10 carries 70 yards) each scored single touchdowns.
The Eagles rushed the ball 55 times for 339 yards with six touchdowns while picking up just 25 yards through the air.
The Olympian defense held the Hornets (2-2) to just 42 yards on 13 carries and gave up 233 passing yards and three touchdowns.
Antonio Riggens led the Eagles with nine tackles while teammate Andrew Whyte had seven stops. The Eagles recorded three sacks – one each by Whyte, Riggens and Jerome Hoover. Whyte completed a big night with an interception while Riggens had a fumble recovery and blocked punt. Rock Gonzalez also caused a fumble.
Ralphie Gomez successfully converted on four of five extra-point attempts.
On the season, Lacsina tops Olympian with 364 rushing yards, followed by Kipling with 283. Kipling has scored six rushing touchdowns this season while Lacsina has four. Cannon, braced by 247 rushing yards, has scored three touchdowns.
Cannon has thrown for just 22 yards with one touchdown. He has a quarterback rating of 88.6. Paul Thompson Jr. has made eight catches for 140 yards and one TD.
Riggens (32) and Whyte (31) lead the Eagles in total tackles. Riggens has four of his team’s 11 sacks. Olympian defenders have three interceptions to their credit and four fumble recoveries.
