Calling for bipartisan support of the judicial system, Congressman Juan Vargas (D-52), issued a statement regarding the Tuesday arrest and arraignment of former President of the United States Donald Trump.
“No one is above the law. Not even former President Donald Trump,” said Vargas, who represents Chula Vista and National City in the House of Representatives. “Ensuring our justice system is respected and adhered to is central to America and its democracy. This is not the time for partisan acts or bias, but a time when we must let the judicial process run its course unimpeded.”
Trump, who pleaded not guilty in a Manhattan courtroom, faces 34 felony counts of falsifying business records stemming from accusations that during his 2016 bid for the presidency he paid hush money to cover up a tryst he had with an adult-film actress.
Trump, a Republican, is the first president in American history to ever be indicted.
A candidate in the 2024 presidential election, Trump is also under investigation for interfering in Georgia’s 2020 presidential election process; for his role in the Jan. 6, 2020 insurrection on Capitol Hill; and for removing classified documents from the White House and taking them to his Florida estate after he lost the 2020 election.
The Manhattan case is believed to begin early next year.
