Southwestern College’s Debate Team returned from the Cross Examination Debate Association National Tournament held at Rutgers University in Newark, New Jersey in March with notable accomplishments.
Baron Castanares and Pia Maria Flores, placed second in the Novice category.
This marks the first time since the 1970s Southwestern College competed in a National Championship round. The debate was decided on a very close 2-1 decision.

All-American Awards are given to a maximum 30 students (2 max from each school) who represent the best of intercollegiate debate. They should demonstrate competitive success, academic success, good conduct, and contributions to their squad.
The National Debate Scholar awards are given to students who maintain strong academic records in addition to their competitive accomplishments.

Ana Sanchez, Outstanding New Competitor Award
The recipient of the National New Competitor Award will be selected among a pool of candidates who began their participation in interscholastic debate in college, are in their first year of competition and are participating in the CEDA Championship.
They should show evidence of growth and participation in the activity.
Southwestern College, Joy McClintock Community College Award
The Joy McClintock Community College Award is given to the community college who has the most competitive season. In addition, they should excel in service and dedication to the community.
