Entering the final quarter of the 2025 high school spring sports season, the Mater Dei Catholic and Bonita Vista softball teams remain top contenders to capture San Diego Section championships.
The same could be said about fellow Metro-Mesa League foes Eastlake and Otay Ranch.
“There is no easy game in the Metro-Mesa League this season,” incoming Bonita Vista coach Vanessa Kalavi said. “The league is stacked from top to bottom.”
No doubt about that.
And the Metro’s other two playing circuits are shaping up as equally competitive. Metro-Pacific League leader Sweetwater is ranked second in the Division IV power rankings with a bead on winning a CIF title.
Southwest is ranked third among Division V schools.
Things could get very interesting, indeed, as the season comes to a close.
Top heavy
Mater Dei Catholic entered the week on top of the Division I softball power rankings with a 17-5 record, followed by Bonita Vista at No. 2 with a 16-3 record. A couple weeks ago, the league rivals were flipped in the rankings.
El Cajon Christian (18-4-1) continues to hover behind the leaders at No. 3, though a gap could be developing. Mater Dei Catholic clubbed the Lady Patriots, 12-2, in a non-league game on April 8.
The top eight teams receive entry into the section’s elite Open Division playoffs with the remaining 12 teams battling it out for the Division I championship.
Other Open Division hopefuls include No. 4 Poway (15-5), No. 5 Cathedral Catholic (13-8), No. 6 Imperial (16-5), No. 7 La Costa Canyon (15-6-1) and No. 8 San Marcos (11-8).
But the rankings remain fluid and nothing is set in stone yet.
No. 9 Mission Hills (10-8) would move into the No. 1 slot for the remaining Division I teams, followed by No. 10 Del Norte (10-8-1) in the No. 2 slot, No. 11 Eastlake (16-5-1) in the No. 3 slot and No. 12 Otay Ranch (10-8-1) in the No. 4 slot.
Rounding out the division would be No. 13 Torrey Pines (12-8), No. 14 Rancho Bernardo (8-8-1), No. 15 El Capitan (6-12), No. 16 Patrick Henry (8-11), No. 17 Steele Canyon (9-11-1), No. 18 Our Lady of Peace (6-13), No. 19 Granite Hills (6-13-1) and No. 20 Carlsbad (3-12).

Teams that have played challenging non-league schedules could have a surprise for opponents as league play starts to fill out the remaining regular season schedule.
