Custom classic cars will be on display at National City’s Kimball Park from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday Aug.11 for the 27th annual Automobile Heritage Day Festival and Car Show.
The free-event, put on by the National City Chamber of Commerce and sponsored by the National City Mile of Cars expects to have about 200 vehicles on display competing for 60 awards in various categories.
Most of the cars are expected to be classic cars. The event for the third straight year will also highlight some electric vehicles for the public to test drive. Having electric vehicles on site ties into the chamber’s efforts of sustainability through its Green Business Program.
New at this year’s event is a Green Zone area dedicated for exhibitors, agencies and businesses that are promoting sustainability, energy efficiency, water conservation, alternative conservation and health and wellness.
National City Chamber of Commerce President Jacqueline Reynoso said Automobile Heritage Day, the chamber’s second longest running event, is an opportunity to market National City’s biggest economic source.
“We do it as an economic development driver to promote the automotive industry in National City since it is the city’s No.1 revenue generator,” she said. “For us, it’s a way of celebrating both our history of National City and celebrating an eye towards the future.”
The chamber no longer has its Tourism and Marketing District, so Reynoso said the event will help bring a positive light to National City for its guests. Reynoso said the event will attract car enthusiasts from throughout the county and car owners from Arizona and Las Vegas.
“It makes for a really good diverse display,” Reynoso said about cars from other states being on display.
The nonprofit A Reason To Survive will have activities for kids such as painting recycling bins with community art. There will also be free train rides, animals, face painting and other activities for children.
Musical entertainment includes the Navy Southwest from 32nd street and the Idea’s Rock & Roll Trio. More than 50 exhibitors will also be on hand.
Reynoso said she hopes people not only attend the event but that they dine, shop and stay a few days in National City.
“Help support the local economy and get to know what National City has to offer,” she said.
