A National City man was ordered Aug. 28 to stand trial for two counts of attempted murder in the shooting of his girlfriend on two separate occasions.
Raymond Milam Magana, 37, was also ordered to stand trial on three counts of assault with a deadly weapon, kidnapping, false imprisonment, and possession of a firearm by a felon.
Deputy District Attorney Jaime Thomas said the attempted murder counts involve an April 2 incident in which the woman was shot in the back and a bullet lodged in her neck. She was in the hospital for three weeks.
Thomas said the second attempted murder charge is for another victim, the new boyfriend of his ex-girlfriend whom he allegedly pointed a gun at also on April 2.
Magana is also charged with shooting his girlfriend in the knee in an unreported incident in Dec. 2017, said the prosecutor. The kidnapping and false imprisonment charges also involve the Dec. incident.
The ex-girlfriend did not testify in the preliminary hearing, so officers told Chula Vista Superior Court Judge Roderick Shelton what she told them.
Her new boyfriend did testify about the April 2 incident which also involved a 3-hour standoff with SWAT officers in the 2800 block of Prospect Street.
The area is unincorporated part of National City, but officers from National City Police assisted sheriff’s deputies in the investigation. They testified in the preliminary hearing.
Magana remained armed inside his ex-girlfriend’s residence for three hours, and he was arrested at the front door at 6:58 p.m. The incident began around 3:55 p.m.
Shelton did not order Magana to stand trial on pre-meditated enhancement to the attempted murder charge.
Shelton ordered Magana to return to court Sept. 12 to get a trial date set. Magana has pleaded not guilty and he remains in the central jail without bail.
