Highland Barber Shop has invited the community to come ‘celebrate like it’s 1972’ this Saturday, July 16 for their 50th anniversary as a National City business.
Now-owner Raland Camara said the landmark shop was originally opened by his parents, Antonio and Betty Camara, and he thinks it is the longest running haircut shop in National City.
Saturday’s event had featured a ribbon cutting ceremony at noon— just as it happened five decades ago—but has since been moved to 1:30 p.m. to accommodate attendance by the mayor. Haircuts will reflect 1972 prices: $3 for a cut.
Camara also said the celebration will include opportunities to ‘spin the prize wheel’ for samples donated by Suavecito and Evolution hair product companies and a possible visit from city dignitaries.
“You know, my dad actually passed away three years ago and when I started helping my mom with the shop, I started to notice how many people would say they used to come with their dad or grandpa and now they’re bringing their own kids,” Camara said in a wistful voice, often lingering for a ‘selfie’ photo in front of the shop.
Highland Barber Shop is located at 1830 Highland Ave .
