The Otay Ranch Mustangs may be marching right into the San Diego Section Division I playoffs after recording a key 35-13 Mesa League victory against the visiting Bonita Vista Barons last Friday. The win hiked the Mustangs record to 1-1 in league play, 4-4 overall, with two regular season games remaining.
A 6-4 finish for Otay Ranch is not out of the question. Neither is a possible home game in the first round of the playoffs. Bonita Vista’s playoff future is less certain after the Barons dropped to 1-1 in league play, 2-6 overall.
David Mondy scored two touchdowns and quarterback Marcus Hernandez tossed a pair of scoring passes to help spark the Mustang offense. Mondy rushed for 140 yards while Andre Jones gained 49 yards and scored on a 36-yard run. Hernandez (118 passing yards) threw TD passes to Sean Licudine (75 yards) and Fernando Murillo (15 yards).
Defensively, Lauvuai Tufele (12 tackles) had one interception while Albert Lopez (11 tackles), Kyle Doton and Jon Bajet each recorded sacks as Otay Ranch limited Bonita Vista to one touchdown (scored from short range by Felix Garcia) and two field goals.
The Mustangs led 14-3 at halftime and 21-10 after three quarters before breaking the game open with a pair of touchdowns in the final quarter.
Otay Ranch hosts the Mater Dei Crusaders (1-6, 0-1) this Friday before taking a bye week. The Mustangs close out the regular season at Chula Vista on Nov. 12.
