Murder suspect may be transferred from Reno to San Diego

An extradition hearing is set Oct. 7 in Reno for a murder suspect who is accused of killing his husband who was a well liked human resources employee with the city of Chula Vista.

Dozens of current and former co-workers of Kevin Powell posted their memories and pictures with him on his online obituary.

The cause of death for Powell, 38, is sealed in court documents by an El Cajon Superior Court judge, but the murder charge filed against Daniel Scott Jordan, 44, alleges a knife was used.

Powell missed several online meetings Aug. 11. Two sergeants with Chula Vista Police showed up at his home in the 4400 block of Carmen Drive in La Mesa to conduct a welfare check.

They found Powell dead, according to the sheriff’s department which assumed jurisdiction it was in an unincorporated part of La Mesa.

Jordan fled the area and was arrested in Reno, Nevada, on Aug. 20 on a no-bail murder warrant issued by a judge. He remains in the Washoe County Detention Facility without bail.

Judge Evan Kirvin sealed the arrest warrant declaration on Aug. 19. A page in the criminal file says Kirvin sealed the contents of the declaration which includes the cause of death because there are confidential matters in it.

Powell formerly worked for the County of San Diego and the city of Coronado. He was a frequent participant in the annual AIDS Life Cycle event, his obituary says.

He is survived by his parents, Diane and Randy Powell, his brother Kyle Powell and his wife Torey, nieces, a nephew, and many friends, his obituary says.
