A number of South County athletes are strong contenders to qualify for this year’s state track and field finals. The top three place-finishers at the section championship advance to the state meet in Clovis the first weekend in June.
At the midpoint of the 2009-2010 season, three South County athletes in individual events were positioned to make that trip.
Otay Ranch’s Marques Roberts ranks first in the section (and first in the state as well) in the boys triple jump (47-5.5).
Bonita Vista’s Alfredo Rodriguez ranks second in the boys 800 run (1:57.0) and sixth in the 3,200 run (9:34.66).
Otay Ranch’s Isaac Mallett ranks third in the boys 300 intermediate hurdles (39.84).
Six more Metro Conference standouts were positioned to make a run at those coveted top three state qualifying berths by ranking among the top six leaders in their respective events.
They include:
Otay Ranch’s Donald Molton ranks fourth in the boys 100 dash (22.32) and fifth in the boys 100 dash (11.05).
Otay Ranch’s David Turner ranks fourth in the boys long jump (21-9.5).
Otay Ranch’s Jacob Roach ranks fifth in the boys 1,600 run (4:24.21).
Eastlake’s Aaron Goodman ranks sixth in the boys 110 high hurdles (15.81).
Eastlake’s Diamond Mitchell ranks sixth in the girls 200 dash (26.09).
Sweetwater’s Maila Lucht ranks sixth in the girls 400 dash (59.67).
Otay Ranch ranks sixth in the boys 4×400 relay (3:28.51).
