The Mater Dei Catholic High School wrestling team competed at the ninth annual San Ysidro varsity wrestling tournament last Saturday. The Crusaders recorded a team record five semifinalists to highlight the tournament.
Juniors Jonas Ullsperger (126 pounds) and Cade Congdon (152 pounds), along with freshman Christian Paquian-Macias (132 pounds) won their matches and advanced to the championship finals.
Ullsperger captured his weight class title with a first-period pin over Olympian’s Ethan Deguzman while Congdon and Paquian-Macias both finished second in their respective weight classes with losses in the championship round.
Also placing for the Crusaders were junior Ricardo Carrillo (182 pounds, fifth place) and senior heavyweight Steven Bradley (sixth place). Mater Dei Catholic finished in sixth place out of the 19 teams that competed.
Ullsperger was voted the tournament’s outstanding lightweight wrestler.
“This is only the third time a Mater Dei Catholic High School wrestler has earned it,” noted Crusader coach Scott Ullsperger.
El Camino won the team title with 192.5 points, followed by Monte Vista in second place with 179 points, Olympian in third place with 174.5 points, San Ysidro in fourth place with 146 points and Oceanside in fifth place with 128 points.
The Crusaders finished with 96.5 points, followed by Montgomery and Point Loma in a tie for seventh place with 95 points, Eastlake in ninth place with 93.5 points, Clairemont in 10th place with 86 points and Mar Vista in 11th place with 75 points.
Mar Vista’s Christian Winnie captured the 113-pound individual championship while Olympian’s Ethan Ramos won the 120-pound title, San Ysidro’s Pablo Perez won the 160-pound title, Montgomery’s Chase Riegg won the 195-pound title and San Ysidro’s Arath Rodriguez won the 220-pound title.
Recording runner-up finishes in their respective weight classes were Mar Vista’s Julian Winnie (106), Montgomery’s Adrian Lopez (145) and Olympian’s Royce Casiano (160).
Mat attack
Castle Park’s Dante Preciado competed at the recent Doc Buchanan tournament in Clovis in what is arguably considered the toughest in-season tournament on the West Coast. He finished among the top 12 in his 138-pound weight class by finishing 4-2.
Helix’s Trence Gillem placed third in his 132-pound division at the Doc Buchanan tournament. Gillem’s only loss was in the semifinals to Buchanan’s Durbin Lloren, the 2015 California state champion.
Eastlake’s Jake Suggett led Metro Conference mat men at last Saturday’s Jim Londos Memorial Tournament by winning his heavyweight division. The Titans, who finished in fifth place among the 25 teams, also had four other wrestlers earn place-finishes: Ben Martinez (second, 120 pounds), Paul Crampton (third, 113 pounds), Michael Johnson (sixth, 152 pounds) and Carlos Vasquez (sixth, 160 pounds).
Poway won the team title, followed by Brawley, Rancho Bernardo and Westview.
