The Mater Dei Catholic boys and girls basketball teams remain red hot in Mesa League play.
The Crusader boys team defeated host Montgomery, 69-56, on Friday to improve to 7-0 in league play, 17-4 overall.
The Lady Crusaders improved to 6-1 in league play, 13-8 overall, following a 53-40 home court victory on Friday.
Trey Anderson drove the MDCHS scoring machine with 20 points while three more players reached double figures in scoring: Beon Riley with 13 points, Cliff Kidd with 11 points and Cameron Smith with 10 points.
Anderson led the Crusaders with 12 rebounds while Kidd paced the winners with 10 assists. Kidd and Riley each had four steals.
Mater Dei Catholic’s boys team has won its last 10 games.
Anderson leads the team with an 18.2 points-per-game scoring average.
Chloe Webb had 17 points and Marissa Sanchez dropped in 15 points to lead the Lady Crusaders past the Lady Aztecs (3-4 in league play, 5-17 overall).
Joice Beda led Mater Dei Catholic with 13 rebounds in the game while Webb topped the victors with six assists and four steals.
The Lady Crusaders have won their last xx games.
Mater Dei Catholic’s hoops teams are next in action on Wednesday, Feb. 1, when the Crusaders boys squad hosts Sweetwater in a 6 p.m. league contest and the Lady Crusaders travel to Hilltop to take on the Lady Lancers in another 6 p.m. game that same night.
Tribute contest
Sweetwater High School will host the fifth annual Michael LeMaster Memorial Classic game on Saturday, Jan. 28, at the National City school. Chula Vista will be the opponent in the boys non-league game that tips off at 6 p.m.
The host Red Devils will unveil their newest inductees into the team’s Hall of Fame at halftime.
The game is played in the honor of LeMaster, a1984 SuHi graduate, who was killed in Afghanistan in September 2012.
Sweetwater, which is now competing in the Mesa League (4-3 record) enters the game 8-9 overall while Chula Vista, which is competing in the South Bay League (2-3 record) is 8-14 overall.
“Michael was well known in the community and served his country with pride,” SuHi boys head coach Jesse Aguirre said. “We will celebrate the life of Michael at halftime of the game. Everyone is encouraged to attend this special night as we all come together as one to celebrate Michael’s life.”
On the horizon
MDCHS is ranked fifth in the San Diego Section Division I boys power rankings and 10th in the Division I girls power rankings.
Eastlake leads Metro Conference teams with a No. 3 ranking in the section’s Division I girls power rankings.
Prep wrestling
Otay Ranch High School will host its annual South Bay Invitational on Saturday, Jan. 28, starting at 9 a.m. Individual awards will be presented from first through fifth place while awards will be presented to the top three teams.
Prep Soccer
Bonita Vista landed itself in first place in the South Bay League boys standings following a 3-0 victory against visiting Mar Vista on Thursday. Previously, the Barons topped host Olympian, 3-1, on Tuesday in a match-up of top teams in the league.
