Break out those dancing shoes and grab a dancing partner for the fifth annual International Mariachi Festival and Competition from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Sunday, March 12, at Pepper Park, 3299 Tidelands Ave.
The National City Chamber of Commerce’s signature event is expected to exceed last year’s attendance record of 15,000 people.
“We expect approximately 20,000 guests in attendance at the International Mariachi Fest,” said Jacqueline Reynoso, executive director of the National City Chamber of Commerce.
“We have received robust media coverage from all major Spanish and mainstream TV stations as well as extensive exposure on social media with over 95,000 hits on Facebook alone.”
Joining mariachi performances will be ballet folklorico dancers in a celebration of arts and culture. Danza Mexi’Cayotl Indio Cultural Center will host the opening ceremony, followed by a high school mariachi competition starting at 1 p.m.
In addition to offering live entertainment the festival will have a family area with many attractions including face painting, extreme water sports, bungee, paintball and virtual reality.
An arts and culture pavilion will display the artwork of 30 local artists. Off-site parking is $10 and free shuttle service will be provided.
“The mariachi program supports the youth of today in their artistic, individual and educational endeavors in an effort to strengthen their abilities to grow as positive and constructive leaders for future generations,” she said.
