The race for this year’s South Bay League championship doesn’t appear quite over yet following Tuesday’s slate of games that saw both Mar Vista and Sweetwater pull to within a game of front-runner Chula Vista in the standings.
Mar Vista hammered the host Spartans, 11-3, as sophomore Abigail Rivera slammed a three-run home run in the top of the fourth inning and also recorded the win in the pitching circle to raise the Mariners league record to 6-2, 11-9 overall.
Sweetwater, which is scheduled to host Chula Vista on Thursday, carried a 7-2 record in league play into that contest against the Spartans (8-1 in league, 13-2 overall).
Sweetwater improved to 15-4 overall following Monday’s 8-3 non-league win over visiting Bayfront Charter.
Chula Vista closes regular season play with its last four games on the road, starting with Thursday’s game in National City. The Spartans play at Francis Parker on Friday, then play at Montgomery on Tuesday, May 8, and at Castle Park on Thursday, May 10.
The San Diego Section playoffs start May 14.
Sweetwater closes regular season play with games at Mar Vista on Tuesday and at Southwest on Thursday.
Mar Vista finishes league play at Montgomery on Thursday.
All games are critical at this point of the season.
Southwest is 6-4 in league play, 11-9 overall, followed by San Ysidro (3-7 in league, 9-11 overall), Montgomery (2-7 in league, 8-13 overall) and Castle Park (0-9 in league, 1-15 overall).
