A National City man who wounded his ex-girlfriend and pointed a gun at someone else has been sentenced to 15 years in state prison.
Raymond Milam Magana, 38, received the sentence that was expected after he pleaded guilty to two felony counts of assault with a deadly weapon. Chula Vista Superior Court Judge Francis Devaney gave him a year of jail credits since Magana was arrested in April 2018.
His ex-girlfriend was shot in the neck on April 2, 2018 and was hospitalized for three weeks. She had showed up at Magana’s residence in the 2800 block of Prospect Street to pick up her belongings along with another man who had previously dated her.
Magana apparently became angry when he saw the other man there to assist her in moving her things out. Sheriff’s deputies learned there was a report of gunfire at 3:55 p.m. The victim was transported to a hospital, but a 3-hour SWAT standoff occurred with officers after Magana would not leave his residence.
The area was in an unincorporated part of National City, so sheriff’s deputies worked with National City Police. Around 6:58 p.m., Magana was surrendered and came outside. He was arrested at his front door.
Magana was evaluated at a hospital for minor injuries and then taken to jail. Two charges of attempted murder and a previous assault involving the ex-girlfriend in December 2017 were dismissed after he pleaded guilty to two assault charges. No restitution was ordered.
