Bail was set at $5 million Oct. 5 for a man charged with 23 felonies that allege he fired shots at his ex-girlfriend’s daycare center in Chula Vista and endangered the seven children who were there at the time.
Gustavo Amiel Sepulveda, 36, was arraigned in a wheelchair before Chula Vista Superior Court Judge Edward Allard III and he pleaded not guilty. Sepulveda had cuts on his feet and had trouble walking so sheriff’s deputies used a wheelchair to transport him, according to one attorney.
Sepulveda was wearing flip flops on Oct. 2 when he allegedly fired shots through a sliding glass door at the daycare center and the glass cut up his feet. Chula Vista Police arrested him and took him on a stretcher into an ambulance to receive medical treatment before he was booked into jail.
Sepulveda was the only person hurt. The seven children were led into a bathroom for safety purposes at the residence on Corte Condesa in Chula Vista. He reportedly set a garage door on fire.
Sepulveda is charged with attempted murder of his ex-girlfriend, 10 counts of assault with a deadly weapon, shooting into an inhabited dwelling, seven counts of child endangerment, two counts of arson, residential burglary, and being a felon in possession of a firearm.
At the time, Sepulveda was on probation for a felony conviction of driving under the influence of alcohol, said Deputy District Attorney C.J. Mody. The DUI case was filed in Chula Vista Superior Court.
Mody asked for the $5 million bail, saying the bail schedule for these 23 counts came to $4.2 million. His attorney, Jody Green, asked for bail to be set at $1 million. The judge revoked probation for Sepulveda at the arraignment, as being arrested and charged with a crime is a violation of probation terms.
Allard set a preliminary hearing for Oct. 19, which could be delayed.
If convicted of attempted murder Sepulveda could face a life sentence in prison and receive a lengthy consecutive terms for the other charges.
