The San Diego Section’s expanded girls wrestling championship tournaments drew quite a crowd last Saturday to the three competition sites: Rancho Bernardo High School (19 teams in Division I), Santana High School (26 teams in Division II) and Lincoln High School (27 teams in Division III).
That’s a total of 72 teams and 42 individual weight class champions — three from Metro Conference schools with 10 finalists, including seven runners-up.
Olympian carried the torch at the Division I tournament with a first-place team finish with 228 points to best runner-up Poway (218.5 points) in a tight battle. The division title is the fifth for the Lady Eagles as they kept their winning tradition going full steam.
Bonita Vista finished ninth with 49.5 points while Eastlake was 12th with 41 points and Otay Ranch was 13th with 39 points. Sweetwater did not score.
San Ysidro topped South County entrants in the Division II field with a 12th place finish with 48 points while Hilltop placed 13th with 44 points. Montgomery was 18th with 25 points while Chula Vista was 19th with 22 points.
Four South County teams were entered in the Division III field with Castle Park placing fourth with 122.5 points, Mater Dei Catholic placing 18th with 29 points, Mar Vista placing 23rd with seven points and Southwest placing 25th with four points.
The top four place-winners in each weight class advance to the upcoming San Diego Section Masters state-qualifying tournament Feb. 21-22 at Christian High School in El Cajon.
Masters qualifiers from the Division I finals included Olympian’s Keagan Wynne Alatiw (first place, 135 pounds), Natalia Righellis (first place, 155 pounds), Elisa Najera (first place, 235 pounds), Jianna Goodwin (second place, 105 pounds), Cheyenne Sandoval (second place, 120 pounds), Vania Victoria (second place, 130 pounds), Sasha Harper (second place, 190 pounds), Madelyn Hogue (third place, 145 pounds), Eastlake’s Emme De Mesa (third place, 115 pounds) and Arianni Benitez (fourth place, 190 pounds), Bonita Vista’s Ella Edvalson (fourth place, 140 pounds) and Leila Keeran (fourth place, 170 pounds), and Otay Ranch’s Keira Grantham (fourth place, 110 pounds).
The Lady Eagles cleaned up on the mat with three individual champions, seven finalists and eight Masters qualifiers.
Three Metro girls occupied the award stand at 140 pounds at the Division I tournament.
Masters qualifiers from the Division II tournament included San Ysidro’s Keyry Martinez (second place, 155 pounds) and Ahlani Dominguez (fourth place, 235 pounds), Montgomery’s Genesis Tovar (third place, 105 pounds), Hilltop’s Isabella Vereganza (third place, 145 pounds) and Chula Vista’s Vivian Romo (fourth place, 170 pounds).
Masters qualifiers from the Division III tournament included Castle Park’s Jazmine Coronel (second place, 130 pounds), Victoria Trujillo (second place, 155 pounds), J Guerrero (third place, 140 pounds), Britanney Esparza (fourth place, 110 pounds) and Kiara Leyva (fourth place, 190 pounds), and Mater Dei Catholic’s Kaila Strother (fourth place, 170 pounds).
Castle Park amassed two finalists and five Masters qualifiers.
Fifth-place finishers included Otay Ranch’s Malita Lumahan (105 pounds, Division I) and Olympian’s Noelani Delacruz (140 pounds, Division I), Hilltop’s Elizabeth Byland (100 pounds, Division II) and Castle Park’s Noahlanie Velasquez (115 pounds, Division III).
Sixth-place finishers included Olympian’s Breanna Rene Reynoso (110 pounds, Division I), Aynnara Quintero (170 pounds, Division I) and Jillian Josa (115 pounds, Division I), Eastlake’s Sydney Weevie (140 pounds, Division I), Otay Ranch’s Janiaya Banks (235 pounds, Division I), San Ysidro’s Kyrako Martinez (120 pounds, Division II), Chula Vista’s Ximena Nuno Arana (190 pounds, Division II), Mater Dei Catholic’s Kailani Topasna (115 pounds, Division III) and Castle Park’s Audrina Perez (125 pounds, Division III).
Brawley captured the Division II team championship with a dominating 265.5 points, followed by Central Union in second place with 173 points.
Ramona won the team title among Division III schools with 243 points, followed by Imperial in second place with 140.5 points and Holtville in third place with 137 points.
Twelve girls will compete in each weight class at the Masters tournament. The top three place-finishers qualify to compete at the state tournament Feb. 27 to March 1 in Bakersfield.
The four boys divisional championships are Saturday, Feb. 15: Division I (Olympian High School), Division II (Orange Glen High School), Division III (Ramona High School) and Division IV (Mar Vista High School).
