Trend setting seems to be in vogue in today’s world of social media. The Bonita Vista High School girls flag football team definitely has set the standard from which all other teams will be measured after winning this year’s San Diego Section Division I championship title with a 19-0 win over second-seeded Torrey Pines Nov. 16 at Escondido High School.
The Lady Barons finished their inaugural season 19-1 with the shutout win over the Lady Falcons (16-1).
“This is huge for the school … for our girls to win the inaugural girls flag football Division I championship is something memorable and can never be done again, it’s the first one,” BVHS head coach Tristan Lamb said. “Everything those girls did, they did it for their school. They really represent for Bonita Vista and they love doing it. They enjoy being here.
“This is nice for the program. If you want to win, you have to care about what you’re doing. Everyone can really see that we have coaches who care and student athletes who believe in us as much as we believe in them.”
Senior Malyna Castillo passed for 181 yards and three touchdowns – two to senior Mahliya Wilson (four catches, 42 yards) and one to senior Lucy Quintero (three catches, 18 yards).

Senior Tatiana Colon had two catches for 30 yards while senior Shania White had one catch for 10 yards. Freshman Sofia Garay had one catch for eight yards.
Bonita Vista also excelled in the rushing department with 10 carries for 95 yards, including two carries for 42 yards by Valenciano, who reeled off one 28-yard burst.
The Metro-Mesa League champions put together a well-rounded performance with four interceptions and two sacks on defense.

The Division II championship game took place prior to the Division I title tilt. In that game, also played at Escondido High School, top-seeded Classical Academy (17-2) defeated third-seeded Cathedral Catholic (13-3) by a score of 50-0.
