Two words- earthquake, and tremor. News reports always call it an earthquake whether it is a 7.0 on the Richter scale or a 4.0 which no one notices. Nothing is ever called a tremor.
Theory and hypothesis are two scientific terms. A theory such as gravity, or evolution has been proven in scientific articles, books, and with experimental evidence. A hypothesis is a new idea which has just occurred to a professor, or author. It is always
called a theory even when it flashed thru a mind moments ago.
Scientists make exact measurements. However people think about the world in inaccurate ways. To err is human.
