Hilltop softball tournament gets underway for 16 teams

The Hilltop High School softball tournament will usher in its 32nd year this week. Current Lancer coach Nancy Acerrio noted the tournament was started by former HHS coach Ian Cumming and has continued in the same format over the years.

“The tournament is very competitive,” Acerrio said.

Sixteen teams from around San Diego and Imperial counties are entered in this year’s tournament, which began Thursday, March 19, and will hit full swing this weekend. Teams are placed in four round-robin pools — two each at Otay Ranch and Hilltop high schools.

Pool play begins on Saturday, March 21. The top two teams from each pool will advance to bracket play on Saturday, March 28 at Hilltop High School, with the finals scheduled for 3 p.m. later that day.
