Fans are still uncertain whether Xolos coach Jorge Almiron is the right man for the job.
But last night’s victory may have earned him some converts after his team defeated Pumas UNAM 2-0 in a sold out Estadio Caliente.
Coming from a tough loss last week the Xolos needed a victory to remain in upper ranks of the Liga MX table.
In the first offensive play within a minute of action Fidel Martinez attempted to cross a ball but instead defender Dario Veron intercepted the pass, in the process nearly scoring an own goal.
In all, it took the Xolos nine minutes to score a goal as Cristian Pellerano crossed the ball into the area, there Raul Enriquez redirected the ball towards Fidel Martinez who beat goalkeeper Miguel Palacios with a soft header.
In the 59th minute Enriquez sent a header into the corner of the Pumas net for the second and final goal.
“In this stadium it will be very difficult for our opponents to win, if we continue playing with such intensity, ” Almiron said. “I think we are on the right path to be protagonist in this tournament.”
He also gave credit to Martinez and the returning Enriquez who plays with the Xolos affiliate in the lower division.
“Im happy because we saw the best version of Fidel, not only he scored but played a great game,” he said.
