Otay Ranch secured a 10th-place finish at last week’s 44-team San Diego Open tournament with a 3-2 tourney showing that included victories against Point Loma (7-6 in overtime), La Jolla Country Day (8-4) and West Hills (9-6). The Mustangs lost to Fallbrook, 13-6, to drop to the consolation medal rounds and then suffered a 19-8 setback to Rancho Buena Vista in the ninth-place game to close out play last Saturday.
Sarah Medina earned all-tournament honorable mention honors. She has compiled 64 goals, 19 assists and a CIF-record 144 steals so far this season.
Bishop’s defeated Torrey Pines to claim the tournament championship, with Valhalla and Granite Hills finishing third and fourth, respectively, in the final team standings. Fallbrook finished fifth overall while RBV was ninth overall.
In the loss to Fallbrook, Medina four goals and three steals while Mariela Rodriguez had one goal and two steals and Kelsey Eaton scored one goal in support of Briana Patricio (10 goalie saves).
Otay Ranch improved to 18-7 entering Thursday’s regular season finale against Bonita Vista at the Las Palmas pool.
The Mustangs defeated Chula Vista, 7-4, in a Mesa League game Feb. 3 at the Parkway pool to improve to 4-1 in league play. Medina had three goals and five steals while Eaton scored two goals. Rodriguez scored once while making seven steals. Tori Kelly had one goal and one steal while Audrey Py had one assist. Patricio made 15 goalie saves.
“That was a good win for us,” ORHS coach Ernie Medina said.
Irene Ramos led the Spartans (1-4 in league play, 7-14 overall) with three goals while Lidia Espinosa scored once.
The teams met in first round play, with Otay Ranch recording a 5-4 victory.
