Girl Scouts San Diego has begun its 2024 summer camp program with more than 1,800 girls from San Diego and Imperial counties expected to attend. Running through Aug. 9, there are still spots available for camp session, and financial aid through Camperships help girls explore nature through hiking and horseback riding, seek adventures on the ropes course, and try their hand at outdoor cooking, engineering, wilderness survival, theater, and more. Girl Scout Summer Camp offers offer a unique blend of outdoor adventures and skill-building activities designed to cultivate leadership qualities. Prior Girl Scout membership is not required to attend.
Camp enables Girl Scouts to take the lead in planning activities for their group at every age and provides opportunities for older campers in grades 7-12 to step into leadership roles as teen mentors, which helps build connections and grow confidence.
Held at four picturesque locations across San Diego County, GSSD’s summer camps provide a nurturing environment for girls of all ages. Day Camps at Balboa Campus and Escondido Program Center (for girls entering grades K-12), and Sleepaway Camps at Whispering Oaks and Winacka in Julian (for girls entering grades 2-12), are the home to more than 180 camp sessions tailored to foster resilience, communication, team building, and decision-making. The organization hired more than 175 seasonal staff members to ensure a memorable and impactful summer camp experience.
“Leadership development is at the core of our summer camp experience,” said Michelle Mullen, Chief Mission Delivery officer of Girl Scouts San Diego in a press release. “Through hands-on activities—leading hikes, hitting the bullseye in archery, completing a STEM experiment—and guided mentorship, we aim to equip girls with the skills they need to lead with confidence and courage.”
“We believe in the power of girls leading girls,” continued Mullen. “Our teen mentors play a vital role in creating a supportive and empowering camp environment, inspiring younger campers to try new things, step outside their comfort zones, and strive for their best.”
